Judge’s homer powers Yankees to 12‑1 rout of Orioles
NEW YORK (Interstat) — Aaron Judge slugged his major league-leading 14th home run and drove in four runs as the Yankees completed a four-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with a 12-1 victory Monday at Yankee Stadium.
Judge’s two-run homer in the first inning gave New York a lead it never relinquished, and the Yankees broke the game open with a six-run eighth inning. It was the 14th win in 16 games for the Yankees, who improved to 24-11. The Orioles dropped to 15-20 and have lost nine of their past 11 games.
Cam Schlittler (5-1) allowed one run on eight hits over six innings, striking out five and walking three to earn the win. Shane Baz (1-3) took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits over four-plus innings with four strikeouts and three walks. The game drew 36,802 and lasted 2 hours, 58 minutes.
Both teams finished with 10 hits, but the Yankees capitalized on timely hitting and Orioles mistakes. Judge’s first-inning blast came on a full-count knuckle-curve from Baz and landed in the Yankees bullpen in right-center, scoring Trent Grisham, who had led off with a double. It was Judge’s sixth first-inning home run of the season — most in the majors — and the 53rd homer of his career against the Orioles in 124 games. He added a two-run single in the eighth inning off Lou Trivino, who made his Orioles debut.
New York extended its lead to 3-0 in the third inning. Grisham doubled, advanced to third on a throwing error by center fielder Leody Taveras, and after an intentional walk to Judge, scored on a sacrifice fly by Cody Bellinger.
Baltimore pushed across its only run in the sixth inning. Dylan Beavers singled and Pete Alonso singled, putting runners at first and second. After a flyout and a walk to Taveras, Colton Cowser walked to force in Beavers and trim the deficit to 3-1. The Orioles loaded the bases with one out, but Jeremiah Jackson struck out swinging to end the threat.
The Yankees answered immediately in the bottom of the sixth. Jasson Domínguez and Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked, and after a lineout, Austin Wells walked to load the bases. Ryan McMahon singled to center to score Chisholm, and José Caballero doubled to left to drive in Wells and McMahon, making it 6-1.
New York put the game out of reach with a six-run eighth inning. Chisholm singled, moved to second on a groundout, and then Wells and Caballero walked to load the bases. Grisham walked to force in Chisholm, and Judge followed with a two-run single to left, scoring Wells and Caballero. Bellinger tripled to right, driving in Grisham and Judge, and Domínguez singled to center to bring home Bellinger, capping the scoring.
Judge finished 2 for 4 with the home run and four RBI. Grisham went 2 for 3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Caballero was 1 for 3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Bellinger had a triple and two RBI. McMahon added a hit and an RBI. For Baltimore, Blaze Alexander went 3 for 4, and Beavers, Alonso, Cowser and Jackson each had one hit.
The sweep extended the Yankees’ mastery over the Orioles this season. New York has outscored Baltimore 39-10 in the four-game series. The two teams will face each other again next week in Baltimore, part of a three-game series from May 11-13.
The game marked the first appearance of the season for Trivino, who signed with the Orioles during the offseason. He allowed three runs on two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning.
The Yankees are scheduled to return home to host the Texas Rangers for a three-game series beginning Tuesday, while the Orioles travel to Miami for a three-game set against the Marlins starting Tuesday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of New York 7, Baltimore 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Yankees a 66.60 percent probability to win. The Yankees were installed as a pregame favorite with a run line of minus 1.5. The total score of 13 went under the over/under line of 8.5.
