Cleveland Guardians at Athletics
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Cleveland Guardians and Athletics continue their three-game series Sunday evening at Sutter Health Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. PDT under partly cloudy skies with temperatures near 72 degrees.
The Guardians (18-16) own a 2-0 lead in the series after winning 8-5 on Friday and 14-6 on Saturday. Cleveland has won three of its last four games overall and holds a slim lead over its hosts in the standings. The Athletics (17-16) have dropped three of their last four.
Left-hander Parker Messick (3-0, 2.79 ERA) is scheduled to start for Cleveland. The rookie has been sharp in his first full season, posting a 1.15 WHIP with 22 strikeouts over 29 innings. The Athletics have not announced a probable starter for Sunday.
Catchers Austin Hedges and Shea Langeliers have been the central figures in the series. Hedges went 3-for-5 with a home run and an RBI in Saturday’s win, giving him six hits and four RBIs over his last five games. Langeliers matched that output in defeat, going 3-for-5 with two homers and three RBIs, raising his average to .364 over his last six contests.
The Guardians’ offense has generated 22 runs in the first two games of the series, powered by timely hitting from the bottom of the order. Kyle Manzardo hit a three-run homer as a pinch-hitter Saturday, and David Fry added a two-run shot.
Cleveland’s bullpen has held to three earned runs over seven innings in the series. The Guardians’ staff has a 3.59 ERA over the last seven games.
After Sunday’s contest, the Guardians travel to Kansas City for a four-game series beginning Monday. The Athletics open a six-game road trip against Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-3 Athletics victory. Cleveland is a -1.5 pregame favorite. The over/under is 9 runs.
