Texas Rangers at Detroit Tigers

DETROIT (Interstat) — The Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers conclude their three-game series Sunday at Comerica Park, with first pitch set for 1:10 p.m. under cloudy skies and a temperature of 46 degrees.

Texas (16-16) will send right-hander Jack Leiter (1-2) to the mound. Leiter is seeking his second win of the season after a rocky start. Detroit (16-17) has not announced a starter opposite Leiter.

The Rangers enter the rubber match after splitting the first two games of the series. Texas won 5-4 on Friday, then Detroit evened the set with a 5-1 victory Saturday.

A key player to watch for Texas is left-handed reliever Jacob Latz. The 29-year-old has been dominant out of the bullpen, tossing 8 2/3 scoreless innings over his past seven appearances. He struck out one in a scoreless inning Friday against Detroit and has not allowed an earned run since April 10 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Latz has a 0.00 ERA over his last 10 outings, with nine strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings.

For Detroit, left-handed reliever Enmanuel De Jesus has been a steady presence. The 29-year-old allowed no runs on no hits over 1 1/3 innings with one strikeout Friday against Texas. Over his past five appearances, De Jesus has surrendered just one earned run in 7 1/3 innings, striking out seven. He struggled April 21 against Milwaukee, allowing five earned runs, but has otherwise been effective.

Leiter will look to bounce back from a rough April. The 25-year-old right-hander, the second overall pick in the 2021 draft, has allowed 12 earned runs over 18 1/3 innings this season, with a 5.89 ERA. He has walked 10 and struck out 18.

The Tigers will counter with a bullpen game or a spot start, as no probable pitcher was listed. Detroit’s bullpen has been solid recently, with Brant Hurter and Burch Smith also contributing scoreless outings Friday.

Texas has won four of its last six games overall. The Rangers are coming off a 3-0 win over the New York Yankees on April 29, but lost two of three to the Athletics before that. Detroit has won two of its last three, including a 5-2 win at Atlanta on April 30.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 5-4 victory for Texas.

After Sunday, Texas travels to New York for a three-game series against the Yankees beginning Tuesday. Detroit returns home Monday to host the Boston Red Sox for a three-game set.

The Rangers are 7-8 on the road this season. The Tigers are 9-8 at home.
