Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates

PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates close a three-game series Sunday afternoon at PNC Park, with first pitch scheduled for 1:35 p.m. under rainy skies and temperatures near 47 degrees.

The Reds (20-13) look to salvage the finale after dropping the first two games by a combined 26-8 margin. Cincinnati has lost three of its last four overall.

Pittsburgh (18-16) has won two straight and six of its last eight. The Pirates outscored the Reds 26-2 in Friday’s 9-1 victory and Saturday’s 17-7 rout.

Cincinnati is expected to start right-hander Chase Burns (3-1, 2.84 ERA), though the club also has righty Braxton Ashcraft (1-2, 4.50) listed as a probable. Burns has won his past two decisions and has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his five starts this season. The Pirates have not announced a counter to Burns or Ashcraft.

Reds outfielder JJ Bleday is a player to watch. In Saturday’s loss, he went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. Over his past five games, Bleday is batting .438 (7 for 16) with two homers and four RBIs.

Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin has been even hotter. He went 4 for 5 with two RBIs on Saturday and is 10 for 26 (.385) over his past six games with two home runs and eight RBIs.

The teams met for a two-game set in Cincinnati on March 30-April 1, with the Reds winning the opener 2-0 before the Pirates took both games of a doubleheader 8-3 and 8-3.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-3 Reds victory. Cincinnati is a 1.5-run favorite, and the over/under is 7.5 total runs.

Following this series, the Reds travel to Chicago for four games against the Cubs starting Monday. The Pirates head to Arizona for three games against the Diamondbacks beginning Tuesday.
