Max Meyer, Marlins One-Hit Phillies in 4‑0 Win

MIAMI (Interstat) — Max Meyer and two Miami relievers combined on a one-hitter, Xavier Edwards homered and the Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 on Saturday night.

Meyer (2-0) struck out seven in a career-high seven innings. He gave up a single to Garrett Stubbs in the third and walked Alec Bohm in the fifth for the only baserunners he allowed. His outing ended after 83 pitches. Anthony Bender and Andrew Nardi each pitched a perfect inning to help snap the Phillies’ four-game winning streak under interim manager Don Mattingly.

The Marlins scored all their runs in three productive innings, starting with a two-out rally in the third that turned a scoreless game into a 2-0 lead. Miami loaded the bases on singles by Kyle Stowers, Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards. After Liam Hicks struck out, Agustín Ramírez drew a walk to force in Stowers. Connor Norby then walked to force in Lopez, giving the Marlins the two-run advantage.

Philadelphia had its only hit the previous half-inning when Stubbs lined a single to right off Meyer. But the Phillies managed nothing more, as the right-hander induced a double-play grounder from Felix Reyes to erase the baserunner.

Miami extended the lead in the fifth inning when Edwards led off with a home run to right-center, his second of the season. The solo shot made it 3-0 and put the game further out of reach.

The Marlins added an insurance run in the sixth. Esteury Ruiz led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Lopez.

Andrew Painter (1-3) took the loss for Philadelphia. He pitched five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out seven. Trevor Richards followed with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Tanner Banks gave up a run on two hits in the eighth inning.

Philadelphia’s offense was stifled all night. The Phillies managed only the one hit and drew one walk. The lone hit came from Stubbs, a backup catcher who started in left field. Philadelphia struck out 11 times, with Kyle Schwarber striking out three times. The Phillies did not advance a runner past first base after the third inning.

Miami’s hitters collected 10 hits, led by Edwards, who went 2 for 4 with a homer and an RBI. Norby also had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Lopez had two hits and an RBI. Ruiz doubled and scored a run. Ramírez walked twice and drove in a run.

The game was played before an announced crowd of 15,126 at loanDepot Park. The contest lasted 2 hours, 20 minutes.

It was the second game of a four-game series between the National League East rivals. The Phillies had won the opener Friday afternoon, rallying for a 6-5 victory. Philadelphia entered Saturday having won four straight games under Mattingly, who took over as interim manager earlier in the week. The Marlins had lost four in a row before Saturday’s victory.

Meyer’s dominant outing was his third consecutive quality start. On April 26 at San Francisco, he threw five scoreless innings with five strikeouts in a no-decision. On April 20 against St. Louis, he allowed two runs over 5.1 innings with eight strikeouts to earn a win.

Painter, the Phillies’ rookie right-hander, has struggled early in the season. He has allowed three or more earned runs in three of his six starts and has not completed six innings in any outing this year.

The Marlins’ bullpen has quietly been effective. Bender struck out two in a perfect eighth, and Nardi struck out one in a perfect ninth. The two relievers combined for six swings and misses on 22 pitches.

Philadelphia’s defense did not commit an error, and the Phillies turned a double play in the third inning when Meyer started a 1-4-3 double play after Stubbs’ single.

Miami’s defense was sharp as well. In the seventh inning, the Marlins challenged a play at the plate; Liam Hicks was called out trying to score on a double by Norby. The call was upheld after review.

The Phillies challenged a pitch result in the eighth inning when Alec Bohm was called out on strikes; the call was overturned, but the at-bat remained an out.

Philadelphia falls to 13 wins and 20 losses on the season, while Miami improves to 16 wins and 17 losses.

The two teams are scheduled to play again Sunday afternoon at loanDepot Park. The Phillies will then return home for a six-game homestand beginning Tuesday against the Athletics. The Marlins will host the Baltimore Orioles for three games starting Tuesday.

Other notable performers included Graham Pauley, who went 0 for 2 but made several defensive plays at third base. Jakob Marsee walked twice in four plate appearances but did not reach base safely otherwise. Kyle Stowers struck out twice but singled in the third inning.

For the Phillies, Bryce Harper struck out twice and grounded out once. Trea Turner went 0 for 4 with two groundouts and a flyout. Adolis García struck out twice and grounded out once. J.T. Realmuto grounded out, struck out and flew out.

The game was the first shutout of the season for Miami and the first time the Marlins have held an opponent to one hit since September 2024.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Miami Marlins 5, Philadelphia Phillies 2. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Philadelphia with a 53.30 percent probability to win. Miami had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of four runs went over the over-under line of 8.5.
