Nolan Arenado homers, Diamondbacks beat Brewers 6‑2
MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — Nolan Arenado crushed a three-run home run in the fourth inning and Ketel Marte added a solo homer in the ninth as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 6-2 on Wednesday night at American Family Field, snapping a two-game losing streak and splitting the first two games of this three-game series.
Arizona improved to 16-13 while Milwaukee fell to 15-14 in front of an announced crowd of 24,540. The game lasted 2 hours, 55 minutes.
Arizona started the scoring with a four-run fourth inning that proved decisive. Trailing 2-0, the Diamondbacks tied the game when catcher Adrian Del Castillo led off the fourth with a solo home run to left center, his second of the season. Ildemaro Vargas followed with a single, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. singled to put runners at first and second. Arenado then launched a 1-1 pitch from Brewers starter Brandon Sproat over the left center field wall for a three-run homer, his fifth of the year, giving Arizona a 4-2 lead it would never relinquish.
The Diamondbacks added insurance in the ninth. Marte led off with a solo home run to right field, his fifth of the season. Corbin Carroll followed with a solo homer to right center, his fourth, to make it 6-2.
Milwaukee had taken an early lead. In the first inning, Brice Turang doubled and scored on a double by Jake Bauers. The Brewers added a run in the third when Brandon Lockridge singled and scored on a double by Turang, his eighth of the season.
Arizona’s bullpen shut down Milwaukee the rest of the way. Kevin Ginkel earned the win, improving to 1-1, pitching 1.1 innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out three. Eduardo Rodriguez started for Arizona and went 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts. Juan Morillo pitched a scoreless seventh with one strikeout, and Taylor Clarke worked a scoreless eighth with one strikeout.
For Milwaukee, Sproat took the loss, falling to 0-2. He allowed four earned runs on six hits over 4.1 innings with five strikeouts. DL Hall threw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out three. Brian Fitzpatrick pitched 1.1 innings, giving up two hits.
The most pivotal sequence of the game occurred in the bottom of the fourth inning, immediately after Arizona grabbed the lead. Milwaukee loaded the bases with two outs after a double by Luis Rengifo, a walk to Joey Ortiz and a walk to Lockridge. But Turang grounded out to first base, ending the threat and preserving Arizona’s 4-2 advantage.
Arizona’s offense generated 11 hits, with Marte going 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. Arenado finished 1-for-3 with the homer and three RBIs. Vargas had two hits and scored a run. Carroll added a hit and a home run. Del Castillo had the solo homer.
Milwaukee managed six hits. Turang went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Bauers doubled and drove in a run.
Arizona had lost the series opener 13-2 on Tuesday, a lopsided defeat that marked the team’s second loss in three games. The Diamondbacks entered Wednesday having won just three of their previous seven games. Milwaukee had won four of its previous six.
The Diamondbacks struck out 14 times but also drew four walks. The Brewers struck out 11 times and walked five.
Arenado’s fourth-inning blast was the game’s decisive moment. After Del Castillo’s leadoff homer tied the game, Vargas and Gurriel kept the line moving with singles, setting the stage for Arenado. His home run, estimated at 405 feet, provided all the offense Arizona’s pitching staff needed.
Rodriguez, despite allowing two runs in the first three innings, settled in and retired six of the final seven batters he faced before exiting with two outs in the fifth. Ginkel took over and struck out Garrett Mitchell to end the inning, then worked a clean sixth with two strikeouts.
Milwaukee’s best chance to answer came in the fourth, when Rengifo’s double and two walks loaded the bases with two outs. But Turang’s groundout snuffed the rally. The Brewers put only one runner in scoring position the rest of the game.
Arizona’s bullpen combined for 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Ginkel, Morillo and Clarke each threw scoreless frames.
The Diamondbacks will try to win the series Thursday in the finale of this three-game set before traveling to Chicago for a weekend series against the Cubs. Milwaukee will host Arizona again Thursday before heading to Washington for a three-game series against the Nationals.
