Eovaldi, Rangers blank Yankees 3‑0 to avoid sweep

ARLINGTON, Texas (Interstat) — Nathan Eovaldi allowed four hits over seven scoreless innings, Josh Jung delivered a two-run single and the Texas Rangers beat the AL-best New York Yankees 3-0 on Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Jung’s grounder through the left side of the infield with the bases loaded in the fifth inning put Texas ahead 2-0 and chased Elmer Rodriguez, a top Yankees prospect making his major league debut. Sam Haggerty added an RBI single in the seventh for the Rangers.

Eovaldi (3-4) struck out seven and walked none, bouncing back from two straight losses in which he had allowed a combined 12 runs over 11 innings. The right-hander retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced, mixing a lively fastball with a sharp curveball to keep the Yankees off balance.

Rodriguez (0-1) lasted four innings in his first big league start, allowing four hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts and two walks. The 22-year-old showed poise early but ran into trouble in the fifth when the Rangers strung together three consecutive baserunners.

Texas took advantage of a hit batter and a walk to start the fifth. Alejandro Osuna was hit by a pitch, and Ezequiel Duran walked. Brandon Nimmo then grounded a single to first baseman Ben Rice, loading the bases. Jung followed with a single to left field, scoring Osuna and Duran.

The Rangers added a run in the seventh. Duran led off with a double to left, his fifth of the season, and scored on Haggerty’s single to center. Haggerty had entered the game earlier as a pinch-runner after Nimmo experienced right hamstring tightness while running the bases.

New York’s best scoring chance came in the fourth inning when Cody Bellinger singled and Jasson Dominguez was hit by a pitch, putting two on with one out. But J.C. Escarra grounded out to first, and Ryan McMahon struck out to end the threat.

Ben Rice had three of the Yankees’ five hits, going 3 for 4 with two singles and a double. Bellinger also singled, and Jose Caballero added a hit before being erased on a double play.

Jung finished 1 for 4 with two RBIs, raising his April average to .381 with 17 RBIs over 24 games. Duran went 2 for 2 with a double, a walk and a run scored.

Jacob Latz earned his second save of the season, pitching two scoreless innings of relief. He allowed one hit and struck out one, retiring the side in order in the ninth.

The game lasted 2 hours, 43 minutes before an announced crowd of 30,408 at Globe Life Field.

New York left fielder Jasson Dominguez was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning but remained in the game.

The Yankees fell to 20-11, while the Rangers improved to 15-16.

Texas had lost the first two games of the series by scores of 3-2 and 4-2, dropping four of their previous five overall. Eovaldi’s strong outing gave the pitching staff a much-needed lift after allowing 11 runs over the previous two games.

Rodriguez, who was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier in the week, became the first Yankees pitcher to make his big league debut as a starter this season. He retired the side in order in the first inning with a strikeout, a walk and a caught stealing, but Texas put pressure on him in the second with two singles and a walk before Nimmo lined out to end the inning.

The Yankees threatened again in the fifth when Caballero singled with one out, but Trent Grisham grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Eovaldi worked efficiently, throwing 93 pitches, 64 for strikes. He did not allow a runner to reach third base after the fourth inning.

Latz entered in the eighth with a three-run lead and retired the side in order on two groundouts and a flyout. He struck out Kyle Higashioka to end the eighth and induced a popout to second to seal the victory.

The Rangers turned two double plays and caught a runner stealing, erasing any potential Yankees momentum.

New York second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. Shortstop Jose Caballero had the only other Yankee hit, a soft ground ball to the pitcher in the fifth.

Texas catcher Kyle Higashioka singled in the second inning but was left stranded.

The Yankees have now lost two of their last three games after winning seven of eight.

New York begins a four-game home series against Baltimore on Friday, while the Rangers travel to Detroit for a three-game set.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of New York 8, Texas 4, and its ELO system gave the Yankees a 56.9 percent probability to win. New York was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 3 went under the over-under line of 8.5.
