Olson’s walk-off homer lifts Braves past Tigers in 4‑3 win
ATLANTA (Interstat) — Matt Olson’s two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Atlanta Braves to a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night at Truist Park, salvaging a split of the two-game series and keeping Atlanta atop the National League East.
Olson’s blast, his ninth of the season, came off Detroit closer Kenley Jansen with one out and Ozzie Albies on first base after a leadoff walk. The ball carried over the right-center field wall, capping a dramatic comeback for a Braves team that had trailed since the third inning.
The loss dropped Detroit to 15-16 and marked the second consecutive defeat to Atlanta, which improved to 22-9. The Braves won Tuesday’s series opener 5-2.
Detroit took an early lead in the second inning. Wenceel Pérez doubled to left field and scored on a single by Kevin McGonigle, who drove in the Tigers’ first run. Jace Jung walked ahead of McGonigle’s hit, putting runners at the corners, but Gleyber Torres grounded out to end the inning with Detroit ahead 2-0.
An inning later, Riley Greene crushed his fourth home run of the season to center field, extending the Tigers’ lead to 3-0.
Atlanta answered quickly. In the bottom of the first, Drake Baldwin singled and Ozzie Albies followed with a two-run homer to left, his seventh of the year, cutting the deficit to 3-2. The Braves managed only scattered singles over the next seven innings against Tigers starter Tarik Skubal and reliever Kyle Finnegan.
Skubal delivered a strong outing, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out seven over seven innings. He left with a 3-2 lead after throwing 96 pitches. Finnegan worked a scoreless eighth, striking out one and stranding a pair of Braves baserunners after a walk and a hit batter.
Atlanta starter JR Ritchie matched Skubal for much of the night. Ritchie allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings, striking out four. Dylan Lee followed with 1 2/3 perfect innings, striking out four. Reynaldo López earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two.
Detroit’s offense managed only five hits, with McGonigle collecting two singles and an RBI. Greene’s homer was the Tigers’ lone extra-base hit. The Tigers stranded six runners and struck out 12 times.
For Atlanta, Olson finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and his game-winning homer. Albies was 1-for-3 with the two-run shot and a walk. The Braves totaled six hits.
The decisive moment came in the bottom of the ninth with the score tied 3-2 — though the game was actually 3-2 in favor of Detroit at the time. A walk by Albies set the stage for Olson, who launched a 1-0 pitch from Jansen over the fence. Jansen took the loss, falling to 0-2, after allowing two earned runs on one hit and one walk without recording an out.
Detroit’s bullpen had been solid until the ninth. Finnegan’s clean eighth kept the Tigers in position, but Jansen could not close it out.
The Tigers return to action Thursday in the finale of the three-game series — the teams originally scheduled a three-game set, though only two games have been played so far — before heading home to face the Texas Rangers on Friday. Atlanta begins a road trip Friday at Colorado.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Atlanta 7, Detroit 5. The ELO system gave Atlanta a 58.30 percent probability to win. Detroit was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The total score of 7 went over the over/under line of 7.5.
