Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays
TORONTO (Interstat) — The Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays will meet Wednesday afternoon at Rogers Centre, with the Blue Jays seeking to complete a two-game sweep after a 3-0 victory Tuesday.
Boston (12-18) has lost four of its last five games, including a shutout loss in the series opener. Toronto (13-16) has won two of its last three.
Right-hander Max Scherzer (1-3, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to start for Boston. The 41-year-old has struggled early, allowing three or more earned runs in three of his five starts. His last outing was a 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees on April 23, where he gave up four runs over 5 2/3 innings.
Toronto had not announced a starter as of late Tuesday. Right-hander Trey Yesavage pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings in the series opener, striking out three and allowing four hits to earn the victory.
Players to watch include Boston left-hander Payton Tolle, who started Tuesday’s loss and went 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with four strikeouts. In his previous start April 23 against the Yankees, Tolle worked six innings, allowing one run on three hits with 11 strikeouts.
For Toronto, Yesavage has been effective in two appearances against the Red Sox this season, combining for 10 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run. He also struck out seven in a no-decision at Boston on April 7.
The Blue Jays hold a slight edge in the season series, winning three of five meetings. Boston won 5-0 on Monday behind a strong start from Tanner Houck, but the Red Sox lineup managed just four hits Tuesday.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Toronto victory, and the Blue Jays have a 55.2 percent win probability according to the ELO system. Toronto is a -1.5 run favorite, and the over/under is 8.5.
Following Wednesday’s game, Boston returns home to face the Houston Astros for a three-game series starting Friday. Toronto travels to Minnesota for a four-game set beginning Thursday.
The Red Sox are 5-9 on the road this season, while the Blue Jays are 7-8 at home.
