NEW YORK (Interstat) — The Washington Nationals visit the New York Mets on Wednesday night at Citi Field, where the forecast calls for 58 degrees and cloudy skies.
Washington (13-17) sends right-hander Cade Cavalli (0-1) to the mound. The Mets (10-19) counter with righty Clay Holmes, who threw six innings of three-hit ball in Tuesday’s 8-0 win over the Nationals.
Holmes has been sharp in recent outings. In his last two starts, he has allowed two earned runs over 13 innings while striking out nine. He also pitched seven scoreless innings against the San Francisco Giants on April 4.
Cavalli seeks his first win of the season. He has not appeared since an April 19 start, when he took the loss against the Atlanta Braves.
Washington’s Brad Lord has been a reliable reliever despite the team’s struggles. Over his last six appearances, Lord has allowed just one earned run in 11 1/3 innings. He pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings Tuesday against the Mets.
The Mets took the series opener 8-0 on Tuesday, with Juan Soto homering and driving in two runs. The Nationals managed three hits off Holmes and Tobias Myers.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-2 Washington victory, but the ELO system gives the Mets a 60.5 percent probability of winning. New York is a -1.5 run favorite, with the over/under set at 7.5.
The teams continue their four-game series Thursday. Washington then hosts Milwaukee for three games, while New York travels to Los Angeles to face the Angels.
