Kansas City Royals at Athletics
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Kansas City Royals, looking to build on a three-game winning streak, visit the Athletics Tuesday at Sutter Health Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. EDT.
Kansas City (11-17) has shown recent offensive life, taking two of three from the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend, including a 12-1 rout Saturday and an 11-9 extra-inning win Sunday. The Royals, however, have struggled overall and are 3-7 in their last 10 games, with that stretch including a sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees.
Left-hander Kris Bubic (2-1, 3.48 ERA) will start for Kansas City. Bubic has been one of the team’s more reliable arms, though he is coming off a no-decision against Baltimore on April 22 in which he allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings.
Oakland (15-13) has been the stronger side early in the season, sitting four games over .500. The Athletics took two of three from the Texas Rangers over the weekend, with a 2-1 victory Sunday. Right-hander J.T. Ginn will start for Oakland. Ginn has been exceptional, winning all five of his decisions this season with a 3.15 ERA. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his five outings, including 3 1/3 scoreless innings Sunday in Texas.
Bobby Witt Jr. is the primary player to watch for the Royals. The shortstop is 9-for-22 with a home run, four RBIs and seven runs scored over his last six games, including a two-hit, two-RBI performance in Sunday’s win. He is hitting .310 on the season.
Ginn is the key name for Oakland, both as a pitcher and as a recent standout at the plate. He not only earned the win Sunday but also contributed with two hits and two RBIs. Outfielder Carlos Cortes also had three hits and two RBIs in that game.
The Royals’ lineup will need to solve Ginn early. Kansas City has shown power but consistency has eluded them. The Athletics’ offense ranks near the middle of the league but has been opportunistic, particularly in close games.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 victory for Oakland. Despite that, Kansas City has been installed as a -1.5 favorite. The over/under is 9.5.
The three-game series continues Wednesday and Thursday before both teams head to Seattle for weekend series.
