Blue Jays blank Red Sox 3‑0 behind Yesavage’s strong outing
TORONTO (Interstat) — Trey Yesavage pitched 5 1/3 innings of four-hit ball and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in two runs as the Toronto Blue Jays blanked the Boston Red Sox 3-0 on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre before 41,949 fans in 2 hours 23 minutes.
The Blue Jays snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 13-16, while the Red Sox dropped to 12-18 after being shut out for the fourth time this season. Toronto also avenged a 5-0 loss to Boston a night earlier.
Yesavage, who earned his first win of the season, allowed only four singles, struck out three and walked one. He faced the minimum through three innings and worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the second. The rookie right-hander threw 11 strikes, 41 balls and put 11 balls in play, but Boston managed just four hits off him and four Toronto relievers.
Boston starter Payton Tolle took the loss, his first decision of the year, after allowing three runs on three hits over 4 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out four, but struggled with command — throwing 10 strikes, 35 balls and putting 10 balls in play. Tolle’s ERA rose to 5.79 after the outing.
The pivotal moment of the game came in the third inning when Toronto broke a scoreless tie. Andrés Giménez led off with a single to center and advanced to third on a double to left by Guerrero Jr. Kazuma Okamoto then lined a sharp single to left, scoring Giménez and Guerrero Jr. Okamoto was thrown out at second base trying to stretch the hit, but the damage was done. The Blue Jays led 2-0, and Yesavage made the advantage stand.
Toronto added an insurance run in the fifth. After a pair of walks by Tolle, Guerrero Jr. delivered a line-drive single to center that scored Myles Straw, who had walked and moved to second on an Ernie Clement walk. Guerrero Jr. went 2 for 3 on the night and raised his average to .317.
From there, Toronto’s bullpen took over. Louis Varland earned his fourth save with a perfect ninth inning, striking out the side. Jeff Hoffman, Tyler Rogers and Mason Fluharty combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out three. Ryan Watson worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings for Boston, allowing one hit and striking out one. Zack Kelly and Tyler Samaniego also pitched scoreless relief for the Red Sox.
Boston’s offense was stifled throughout. After collecting four hits in the first four innings, the Red Sox managed only one more hit — a single by Masataka Yoshida in the sixth — and did not advance a runner past second base after the second inning. Boston left five runners on base and struck out 11 times. Trevor Story had a single and a bunt single, but was stranded at third in the second inning. Willson Contreras doubled in the first but was left at third.
The Red Sox have now lost four straight, their longest skid of the season, after being swept by the New York Yankees and dropping the opener of this two-game series in Toronto. Boston fell to 3-8 in one-run games and 2-9 on the road. The Red Sox will try to avoid a series sweep Wednesday afternoon before returning home to face Houston.
Toronto, meanwhile, snapped a three-game home losing streak and moved within two games of .500 for the first time since April 18. The Blue Jays have won five of their last eight after a rough 1-6 stretch. They will look to take the series Wednesday before heading to Minnesota for a four-game road trip.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Toronto Blue Jays 5, Boston Red Sox 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave Toronto a 54.30 percent probability to win. Boston had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The total score of 3 went over the over/under line of 8.
