Tampa Bay Rays at Cleveland Guardians
CLEVELAND (Interstat) — The Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians continue their three-game series Tuesday night at Progressive Field, with first pitch scheduled for 6:10 p.m. under cloudy skies and 71-degree temperatures.
Tampa Bay (17-11) sends right-hander Nick Martinez (1-1) to the mound. Cleveland (15-15) counters with right-hander Tanner Bibee (0-3), who is still seeking his first win of the season.
The Rays took the series opener Monday, beating the Guardians 3-2, and have won 10 of their last 12 games. Tampa Bay’s recent surge has been fueled by strong starting pitching, including Steven Matz, who earned the win Monday by allowing two earned runs over seven innings with two strikeouts. Over his last five starts, Matz has posted a 4-1 record with a 2.06 ERA across 26.1 innings, including seven strikeouts in a dominant outing against the New York Yankees on April 10.
Cleveland enters at .500 after losing four of its last six games. The Guardians’ offense has struggled to produce consistently, plating two or fewer runs in four of those contests. Parker Messick, a left-hander, took a hard-luck loss Monday despite allowing just one earned run over 5.2 innings with nine strikeouts. Messick has been sharp over his last five outings, posting a 3-1 record with a 1.35 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 30.1 innings.
The Guardians are listed as a -1.5 run favorite in the betting market, while the over/under total is 8. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 Tampa Bay victory.
Bibee will look to bounce back after allowing four earned runs over 5.1 innings in a loss to Houston on April 22. Martinez has been effective in his four starts, holding opponents to two earned runs or fewer in three of them.
The series concludes Wednesday afternoon. Tampa Bay returns home to host San Francisco on May 1, while Cleveland begins a three-game road trip at the Athletics the same day.
