St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals complete a quick two-game set Tuesday at PNC Park, with the Pirates aiming for a series sweep following a 2-0 victory Monday.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. EDT under partly cloudy skies with temperatures near 71 degrees.
Right-hander Kyle Leahy (2-3, 4.35 ERA) takes the mound for St. Louis (14-13), which has lost four consecutive games. The Pirates (16-12) counter with a bullpen game after Monday’s starter covered five innings.
St. Louis is reeling after getting swept in a three-game home series against Seattle. The Cardinals managed only two runs in Sunday’s 3-2 loss, with left fielder Nathan Church homering and going 2-for-4. Leahy will look to reverse a personal trend that has seen the Cardinals lose three of his last four starts.
Pittsburgh won for the sixth time in nine games Monday behind a strong pitching performance. The Pirates’ bullpen has been effective, with Cam Sanders emerging as a reliable arm. Sanders tossed two scoreless innings Sunday at Milwaukee, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
Players to Watch
Cardinals reliever Michael McGreevy, who worked six innings Sunday against Seattle, allowing one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts in a losing effort. McGreevy has a 2.70 ERA over his last three appearances covering 16 2/3 innings. He is not scheduled to start Tuesday but could provide length behind Leahy if needed.
Sanders, who has a 4.15 ERA in 13 appearances, has allowed one earned run over his last 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander struggled earlier this month against Tampa Bay (four earned runs in 2/3 inning) but has regained command over his last two outings.
The Cardinals have lost three straight to the Pirates dating to last season. St. Louis owns a 14-13 record but has been outscored 18-8 during its four-game skid. Pittsburgh has won three of four and is 8-6 at home.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 Pirates victory.
The teams conclude the series Wednesday and Thursday before St. Louis returns home for a three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers beginning Friday. Pittsburgh hosts Cincinnati for three games starting Friday.
