Harrison strikes out 12 as Brewers blank Pirates 5‑0

MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — Kyle Harrison pitched six dominant innings, striking out 12 and allowing just one hit, as the Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at American Family Field.

The Brewers sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run fourth inning, chasing Pirates starter Carmen Mlodzinski from the game and providing all the offense Harrison and the bullpen would need. Milwaukee snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 14-13, while Pittsburgh fell to 16-12 after winning the first two games of the series.

Harrison, who improved to 2-1, was nearly untouchable. He retired the first six batters he faced, striking out the side in the first inning and working around a two-out single by Marcell Ozuna in the second. The left-hander did not allow a runner past first base until the seventh inning, when he had already departed. Harrison threw six innings, surrendering only that single, walking two and striking out 12 on 94 pitches. He set down the final eight batters he faced before being lifted for the bullpen.

Mlodzinski (1-2) had kept the game scoreless through three innings, but the Brewers broke through in the fourth. William Contreras led off with a single. Jake Bauers followed with a ground-rule double to right-center field, putting runners at second and third. Gary Sanchez grounded out to second base, scoring Contreras to make it 1-0. After Garrett Mitchell struck out, Sal Frelick reached on catcher interference by Joey Bart. Luis Rengifo singled to center field, scoring Bauers and moving Frelick to second. David Hamilton then doubled to right field, driving in Frelick and sending Rengifo to third. Brandon Lockridge capped the inning with a two-run single to left field, scoring Rengifo and Hamilton for a 5-0 lead.

Mlodzinski was charged with five runs, four earned, on five hits and one walk over 3 2/3 innings. He struck out four.

The Pirates managed only two hits in the game. Nick Gonzales doubled with one out in the seventh inning, but was left stranded. Pittsburgh put two runners on in the eighth when Konnor Griffin walked and Joey Bart reached on a fielder’s choice with an error by shortstop David Hamilton. But Billy Cook struck out, Jake Mangum struck out, and Gonzales walked to load the bases before Bryan Reynolds grounded out to end the threat. The Pirates went down in order in the ninth.

Milwaukee’s bullpen closed the door. Abner Uribe struck out two in a perfect eighth inning. Aaron Ashby struck out two in a perfect ninth. Trevor Megill allowed a one-out single in the seventh but struck out two in his inning. The Brewers pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts while issuing three walks. Pittsburgh pitchers struck out 11 and walked seven.

Bauers had two hits for Milwaukee, including two ground-rule doubles. Lockridge drove in two runs. Rengifo and Hamilton each had a hit and an RBI. The Brewers finished with seven hits.

The game lasted 2 hours, 40 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 31,500.

Pittsburgh had won the first two games of the series by scores of 6-3 and 6-0, but the Pirates could not solve Harrison on Sunday. The Pirates are scheduled to return home Monday to begin a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Brewers host the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Pittsburgh 5, Milwaukee 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave Milwaukee a 62.30 percent probability to win. Milwaukee was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of 5 runs went over the over-under line of 8.
