Washington Nationals at Chicago White Sox
CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Washington Nationals and Chicago White Sox conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field, with first pitch scheduled under clear skies and temperatures near 60 degrees.
Washington (12-16) will send left-hander Foster Griffin (3-0, 2.70 ERA) to the mound. Griffin has been a steady presence in the rotation, earning a decision in each of his five starts this season. The White Sox (11-16) have not announced their starting pitcher.
The series is tied 1-1 after a pair of tightly contested games. Chicago won 5-4 on Friday, rallying in the late innings. Washington responded Saturday with a 6-3 victory in 10 innings, powered by right-hander Jake Irvin’s strong start (Interstat) — 5 2/3 innings, four hits, no earned runs and nine strikeouts (Interstat) — and shortstop Nasim Nuñez’s two-hit, four-RBI performance.
Irvin, who has been a key figure for the Nationals this season, has posted a 2.76 ERA over his last four outings despite an inconsistent team performance around him. Over that span, he has allowed only seven earned runs in 20 2/3 innings while striking out 25.
For the White Sox, left-hander Noah Schultz has been effective in recent starts. In Saturday’s loss, he allowed two earned runs over six innings with eight strikeouts. Over his last three outings, Schultz has a 2.35 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings.
Washington enters the game having lost six of its last nine, while Chicago has won four of its last six.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-3 White Sox win, giving Chicago a 50.4% win probability. The White Sox are listed as -1.5 favorites, with the over/under set at 8.5 runs.
Following Sunday’s game, Washington travels to New York for a three-game series against the Mets starting Tuesday. Chicago returns home to host the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.
