Quintana, Vodnik lead Rockies to 3‑1 win over Mets

NEW YORK (Interstat) — Left-hander Jose Quintana pitched 5 1/3 innings of two-hit ball, Victor Vodnik earned his fourth save and the Colorado Rockies defeated the New York Mets 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.

The Rockies snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 12-16, while the Mets fell to 9-18. Colorado took two of three in the weekend series, following a 4-3 win Friday and a postponement Saturday.

Quintana allowed one earned run, struck out five and walked two. He retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first inning. The veteran lefty had lost his previous two starts, allowing seven earned runs over 8 2/3 innings combined.

The Rockies scored one run apiece in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Colorado finished with seven hits, while the Mets managed four.

Mets starter Nolan McLean matched Quintana for five innings, allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. He did not factor into the decision after leaving with the game tied 1-1.

Tyrone Taylor provided the Mets’ only offense with a solo home run in the fifth inning, his second of the season.

Jake McCarthy went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Colorado. Troy Johnston drove in one run and Edouard Julien scored twice.

The game’s decisive moment came in the eighth inning, when the Mets loaded the bases with one out and failed to score. Vodnik shut the door in the ninth.

Quintana began the game in trouble. He walked Bo Bichette and Luis Robert Jr. around a Juan Soto strikeout, then gave up a single to Mark Vientos to load the bases. But Quintana struck out Marcus Semien and got Brett Baty looking on a called third strike after a successful challenge on the pitch result.

Colorado broke through in the fourth. Julien singled sharply to center, Mickey Moniak singled to right and TJ Rumfield walked to load the bases. Johnston singled to right, scoring Julien for a 1-0 lead. After Kyle Karros struck out, Brett Sullivan grounded into a double play — pitcher McLean to catcher Luis Torrens to first baseman Vientos — that erased Moniak at the plate and ended the rally.

The Mets tied it in the fifth. Taylor led off with a homer to left-center, his second of the season. Quintana then struck out Tommy Pham, got Torrens on a groundout and retired Bichette on a popout to end the inning.

Colorado regained the lead in the sixth against reliever Huascar Brazoban. Julien led off with a double to left. Moniak walked and Rumfield reached on a fielder’s choice with a throwing error by first baseman Vientos, loading the bases. Johnston grounded into a double play, but Julien scored to make it 2-1. Karros grounded out to end the inning.

The Rockies added an insurance run in the seventh. Sullivan doubled to right off Brazoban. After Ezequiel Tovar struck out on a foul tip, McCarthy singled to right, scoring Sullivan for a 3-1 lead. Jordan Beck walked, but Julien grounded out to end the inning.

The Mets mounted their best threat in the eighth. Reliever Jaden Hill, who had entered in the seventh, gave up a leadoff groundout to pinch-hitter Carson Benge. Francisco Alvarez then singled to center, and Bichette singled to left, moving Alvarez to second. Soto walked to load the bases. Hill was replaced by Juan Mejia, who induced Robert to pop out to first baseman Johnston in foul territory for the second out. Mejia then struck out Vientos swinging to escape the jam.

Vodnik worked a perfect ninth, striking out Semien, getting Baty on a groundout and striking out MJ Melendez on a foul tip to seal the save.

Houston Warren pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Mets, striking out one. Mejia worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Hill allowed two hits but no runs in his inning of work.

The Rockies placed runners on base in eight of nine innings but grounded into two double plays and struck out 11 times. The Mets struck out 11 times as well.

Colorado begins a three-game series Tuesday at Cincinnati. The Mets host Washington for a three-game set starting Tuesday.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Colorado Rockies 4, New York Mets 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Mets a 69.50 percent probability to win. New York was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 4 went over the over-under line of 7.5.
