Royals Blast Angels 12‑1 Behind Ragans, Loftin

KANSAS CITY (Interstat) — Cole Ragans struck out 11 over six dominant innings and Nick Loftin drove in four runs as the Kansas City Royals routed the Los Angeles Angels 12-1 on Saturday at Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals improved to 10-17, while the Angels fell to 12-16 after losing their second straight in the series. Kansas City took the opener Friday 6-3.

Ragans allowed five hits and one earned run, walking none. He rebounded from a rough start April 19 against the New York Yankees, when he gave up seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings, and matched his quality start from April 14 against Detroit, when he tossed six shutout innings.

Walbert Urena took the loss for the Angels, falling to 0-3. The left-hander allowed four runs on four hits over three innings, striking out three and walking two.

The Royals struck first in the second inning. Salvador Perez launched a line-drive homer to left field, his fourth of the season, tying the game 1-1. After Jac Caglianone walked and Isaac Collins struck out, Michael Massey singled to put runners at the corners. Loftin followed with a fly-ball single to center, scoring Caglianone to give Kansas City a 2-1 lead.

The Angels had a chance in the top of the second, putting two on with one out on a single by Oswald Peraza and a ground-ball single by Vaughn Grissom after a successful challenge at first base. But Nolan Schanuel and Logan O’Hoppe struck out on foul tips to end the threat.

Kansas City expanded its lead in the third. Bobby Witt Jr. led off with a double and scored on a single by Perez. After Caglianone flied out, Collins walked to load the bases. Massey flied out, but Loftin walked to force in Pasquantino, making it 4-0.

The Angels got on the board in the fourth when Jo Adell homered to center, his fourth of the season, cutting the deficit to 4-1. The solo shot came off Ragans, who then retired the next three batters, two by strikeout.

Ragans continued to dominate. He struck out the side in the fifth and worked around a double by Jorge Soler in the sixth. Over his final three innings, he allowed only one hit and struck out six. He finished with 11 strikeouts, a season high.

Kansas City added a run in the sixth. Loftin reached on a fielding error by third baseman Oswald Peraza, moved to second on a single by Kyle Isbel and advanced to third on a walk to Carter Jensen. After Witt popped out, Vinnie Pasquantino walked to force in Loftin, making it 5-1. Perez grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The game broke open in the seventh. Caglianone walked and Collins singled. Massey singled to left, scoring Caglianone to make it 6-1. Loftin then reached on a fielder’s choice that turned into a three-run play. Shortstop Zach Neto’s fielding and throwing errors allowed two more runs to score, putting the Royals ahead 8-1. Isbel singled but was thrown out trying to stretch it, and Carter Jensen struck out to end the inning.

The Royals put the game away in the eighth with four more runs. Perez singled and Caglianone doubled. After a walk to Collins loaded the bases, Massey popped out. Loftin singled to right, scoring Perez and Caglianone to make it 10-1. Isbel was hit by a pitch, and Jensen singled to center, driving in Collins and Loftin for a 12-1 lead. Witt walked to load the bases again, but Pasquantino grounded out.

The Angels managed only two hits after the fourth inning. The bullpen combination of Daniel Lynch IV, Mason Black and John Schreiber held Los Angeles scoreless over the final three innings. Lynch pitched a perfect seventh. Black allowed two hits but struck out two in the eighth, and Schreiber worked a clean ninth with one strikeout.

Perez finished 3 for 5 with the home run and two RBIs. Loftin went 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Witt doubled and scored twice. For the Angels, Adell was 1 for 4 with the solo homer. Vaughn Grissom had two hits, including a double, and Soler doubled.
