Cubs rally past Dodgers with Swanson’s big night
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Dansby Swanson drove in four runs with a triple and a home run, and the Chicago Cubs defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 on Friday night at Dodger Stadium.
The Cubs improved to 17-9, matching the Dodgers’ record, in a game that saw both teams score all their runs in a late burst after a tense, low-scoring start.
Emmet Sheehan started for the Dodgers and was dominant over 6⅓ innings, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out 10. But the Cubs broke through against him in the seventh inning and never looked back.
The game was scoreless through two innings as Chicago starter Jameson Taillon matched Sheehan. Taillon allowed four hits and four earned runs over five innings with four strikeouts, but the Dodgers did not punish him until the third.
In the bottom of the third, with two outs, Hyeseong Kim singled and Alex Freeland walked. Shohei Ohtani struck out for the second out, and Freddie Freeman lined out sharply, but Will Smith followed with a three-run homer to right-center field, scoring Kim and Freeland to give Los Angeles a 3-0 lead.
The Dodgers added a run in the fourth. Max Muncy doubled and scored on Kim’s second single of the night, making it 4-0. Kim was caught stealing second to end the inning.
Sheehan continued to overpower Chicago hitters. Through six innings he had allowed only two hits and had struck out nine, walking none. But in the seventh, the Cubs finally found a foothold.
Moisés Ballesteros led off with a single. After Carson Kelly flied out, Pete Crow-Armstrong walked, bringing Swanson to the plate with two on and one out. Swanson tripled to center field, driving in Ballesteros and Crow-Armstrong to cut the Dodgers’ lead to 4-2. Nico Hoerner followed with a single to left, scoring Swanson to tie the game at 4-4.
The Cubs then took the lead in the eighth. Alex Bregman homered to left-center field, his third of the season, putting Chicago ahead 5-4. Bregman finished 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI.
Chicago added insurance in the ninth. Crow-Armstrong singled and Swanson followed with a two-run homer to left, his sixth of the season, extending the lead to 6-4.
The Cubs’ bullpen locked the game down after Taillon departed. Ryan Rolison earned the win, working three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one. Rolison, who had not allowed an earned run in his previous outing, improved to 1-0 on the season.
Corbin Martin pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out one, to earn his first save.
Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott took the loss after allowing Bregman’s go-ahead homer in the eighth. Blake Treinen worked a scoreless inning but gave up three hits and an earned run.
Swanson’s performance highlighted a productive stretch. He had driven in two runs in an 8-7 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday, and he had a three-RBI game with a homer against the Phillies on April 20. His triple and homer on Friday gave him four RBIs.
Will Smith led the Dodgers with three RBIs on his third-inning homer. Kim went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Muncy doubled and scored.
The Cubs finished with 11 hits to the Dodgers’ six. Chicago pitchers combined for 25 strikes, 55 balls and 25 balls in play, while Los Angeles pitchers had 13 strikes, 45 balls and 13 balls in play.
Attendance was 53,733. Time of game was 2 hours, 45 minutes.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Chicago Cubs 8, Los Angeles Dodgers 5. The ELO system had given the Dodgers a 60.10 percent probability to win, and Los Angeles had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 10 went under the over-under line of 9.5.
