Mahle, Bailey Lead Giants Past Dodgers in Pitching Duel

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — In a classic pitchers’ duel that defied pregame projections, Patrick Bailey’s three-run homer in the seventh inning broke a scoreless tie and propelled the San Francisco Giants to a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night at Oracle Park.

A crowd of 40,277 watched as Giants starter Tyler Mahle and Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani traded zeros for six innings before Bailey delivered the decisive blow off reliever Jack Dreyer.

The win gave the Giants consecutive victories over their archrivals after a 3-1 triumph on Tuesday, improving their record to 11-13. The Dodgers, who entered as heavy favorites, fell to 16-8 and were shut out for the first time this season. The combined three runs fell well under an over/under line of 7.5, and the result overturned a Interstat projection that had favored Los Angeles by a 64.4% probability.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the bottom of the seventh. After Ohtani departed following six shutout frames, the Giants quickly pounced on the Dodgers’ bullpen. Jung Hoo Lee led off with a single against Dreyer, and Heliot Ramos followed with another single. Drew Gilbert then executed a sacrifice bunt, moving both runners into scoring position.

That set the stage for Bailey, who drove a 1-0 offering from Dreyer deep to left-center field for his first home run of the season, clearing the bases and electrifying the Oracle Park crowd. The blast accounted for all the game’s scoring, as the Dodgers mustered only four hits total and never advanced a runner past second base.

Mahle was the cornerstone of the Giants’ effort, earning his first win of the season against three losses with a masterful performance. He scattered three hits over seven shutout innings, walking two and striking out five. This outing was a stark turnaround from his previous start on April 15 in Cincinnati, where he was tagged for eight earned runs in four innings.

He was matched pitch-for-pitch by Ohtani, who took a no-decision despite allowing just five hits and no runs over six innings, striking out seven. The Dodgers’ ace worked out of his only significant jam in the sixth, stranding runners at second and third by striking out Casey Schmitt.

The Dodgers threatened only once against Mahle. In the fourth inning, Freddie Freeman singled and Max Muncy doubled, putting runners on second and third with one out. Mahle induced a fielder’s choice grounder from Andy Pages, on which Freeman was thrown out at home, and then got Hyeseong Kim to ground out to end the inning.

Freeman collected two of the Dodgers’ four hits, while Ramos and Rafael Devers each had two hits for the Giants.

After Bailey’s homer, the Giants’ bullpen sealed the win. Caleb Kilian worked a scoreless eighth, allowing a single, and Ryan Walker pitched a perfect ninth for his third save of the season. Dreyer was charged with the loss, falling to 1-1.

The defeat marked the second straight for the Dodgers after a 12-3 win in Colorado on Monday. The Giants, meanwhile, continued their up-and-down April, securing their first series win against the Dodgers this season.

The two teams conclude their three-game series on Thursday afternoon at Oracle Park. The Dodgers will then return home to open a series against the Chicago Cubs on Friday, while the Giants will welcome the Miami Marlins to begin a four-game set on Friday.
