Fried Dominates as Yankees Top Red Sox for Second Straight Night

BOSTON (Interstat) — Amed Rosario’s first-inning grand slam provided all the necessary offense and Max Fried delivered a masterful eight-inning performance as the New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-1 on Wednesday night at Fenway Park.

The victory gave the Yankees their second straight win in the series and improved their record to 15-9, while the struggling Red Sox fell to 9-15.

The game’s decisive moment came almost before the Fenway faithful had settled into their seats. Facing Red Sox starter Ranger Suarez, the Yankees loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the first on a walk to Aaron Judge and a double by Giancarlo Stanton. Rosario, batting fifth, then took a 1-1 offering from Suarez and drove it over the wall in left-center field for a grand slam, his fourth home run of the season. The four RBIs on the swing matched the total output the Red Sox would manage all night.

That early outburst proved more than enough for Fried, who was dominant in his bounce-back outing. The left-hander, coming off a loss to the Los Angeles Angels where he allowed five earned runs, was in complete command. He scattered just three hits over eight scoreless innings, striking out nine and walking one. He faced minimal trouble, with Boston’s only serious threat coming in the second inning when a walk and a Jarren Duran double put runners on second and third with no outs. Fried responded by striking out Caleb Durbin and Connor Wong before fanning Isiah Kiner-Falefa on a swinging strike three that was dropped by catcher Austin Wells, who recovered to throw to first to complete the inning-ending out.

Fried’s performance starkly contrasted with that of Suarez, who took the loss to fall to 1-2. Suarez lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing all four Yankees runs on five hits, including the costly grand slam. He walked two and struck out four.

The Yankees added their final run in the third inning. Judge led off with a single, advanced to third on Stanton’s second double of the night, and scored on Rosario’s sacrifice fly to left field.

Boston’s bullpen, notably Eduardo Rivera, kept the game from slipping further away. Rivera provided 3 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief, striking out three. Zack Kelly added a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.

Fried departed after the eighth, having thrown 108 pitches. Brent Headrick came on to close it out in the ninth for New York but did not find it easy. After a groundout, Trevor Story singled to right. Andruw Monasterio then flied out, bringing Duran to the plate. Duran, who had two of Boston’s five hits, lined a single to center field, scoring Story to break up the shutout. Headrick then induced a game-ending groundout from Durbin to shortstop José Caballero to seal the victory.

The Yankees managed six hits total, with Stanton’s two doubles and Judge’s single and two walks setting the table. Boston’s Duran finished 3 for 4 with an RBI double and the ninth-inning run-scoring single.

The game, played in a brisk 2 hours and 28 minutes before an announced crowd of 34,049, saw the Yankees’ pitching continue to stifle the Red Sox offense. New York has now held Boston to one run over the first two games of this series.

Fried earned the win, improving to 3-1. According to the Interstat game simulator, the final score defied a projection of a 6-5 Yankees win, with the total runs falling well under the over/under line of 7.5. The Yankees were pregame favorites with a spread of -1.5, which they covered.

The two teams conclude their three-game series on Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park before the Yankees travel to Houston and the Red Sox visit Baltimore.
