San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — The San Diego Padres will look to rebound from a shutout loss and avoid a series sweep when they face the Los Angeles Angels in an evening matchup Sunday at Angel Stadium.

The Padres (13-7), who entered the series with the best record in the National League, have been held scoreless for 18 consecutive innings by Angels pitching. They were blanked 8-0 on Friday and played to a scoreless tie through nine innings Saturday before the game was suspended due to a malfunctioning bank of stadium lights. That game will be completed at a later date.

Sunday’s pitching matchup features right-hander Michael King (2-1) for San Diego against Angels left-hander Reid Detmers (1-1). King will aim to continue the Padres’ strong starting pitching, while Detmers looks to build on a solid Angels rotation that has stifled San Diego’s lineup.

A key player for the Padres is reliever Wandy Peralta, who has been a bright spot in a bullpen that was taxed Friday. Peralta tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in that loss and has not allowed an earned run in eight of his last 10 appearances.

The Angels (11-10) will counter with their own standout arm in José Soriano, though he is not scheduled to start. Soriano dominated the Padres on Friday, striking out eight over 5 2/3 shutout innings. He has been exceptional to open the season, pitching at least six innings and allowing one earned run or fewer in four of his five starts.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the Padres are projected to break their scoring drought in a big way with an 8-4 victory. San Diego has been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The over/under is set at 9 runs.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. PDT under clear skies with a game-time temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Following the series finale, the Angels will open a three-game set at home against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. The Padres travel to Denver to begin a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.
