Skubal Strikes Out 10 as Tigers Even Series With Red Sox
BOSTON (Interstat) — Tarik Skubal overpowered Boston’s lineup with 10 strikeouts over six dominant innings, and the Detroit Tigers rebounded from a shutout loss to defeat the Boston Red Sox 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.
A crowd of 36,527 watched as the Tigers evened the series after a 1-0 defeat a day earlier. Detroit improved to 11-10, while Boston fell to 8-12.
The most important part of the game was Skubal’s command from the outset, which set a tone the Red Sox never overcame. The left-hander allowed just four hits and one earned run, stifling a Boston offense that managed only five hits total. His performance was a sharp return to form after a rough outing in Minnesota on April 7, and it anchored a Tigers pitching staff that combined for 15 strikeouts.
Detroit’s offense provided early support against Boston starter Brayan Bello. In the first inning, Kevin McGonigle and Colt Keith hit back-to-back singles. After a walk to Riley Greene loaded the bases, Kerry Carpenter worked another walk to force in McGonigle for a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers broke the game open in the fourth. Carpenter led off the inning by launching a solo home run, his fourth of the season, over the right field wall. Wenceel Pérez then walked, and Javier Báez followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Jake Rogers drove in Pérez with a sacrifice fly, and McGonigle capped the rally with a sharp RBI single to score Báez, extending the lead to 4-0.
Boston’s lone run came in the fifth. Wilyer Abreu singled and Ceddanne Rafaela doubled to put runners at second and third with no outs. After a walk loaded the bases, Connor Wong grounded into a double play, which allowed Abreu to score but effectively killed the rally.
From there, the Tigers’ bullpen silenced any hope of a comeback. Tyler Holton pitched two perfect innings of relief, striking out two. Closer Kenley Jansen allowed a single in the ninth but secured the final three outs for his fifth save of the season.
Skubal earned the win, improving to 3-2. He has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his five starts this season. Bello took the loss for Boston, falling to 1-2 after surrendering four earned runs on five hits over four innings.
Boston’s bullpen provided a bright spot, as Jovani Morán, Zack Kelly and Greg Weissert combined for five innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. It was not enough, however, to offset the early damage against Bello and the team’s inability to solve Skubal.
The Tigers’ victory defied pregame projections from Interstat, which gave Boston a 55.7 percent probability to win and projected a 5-4 final score. The combined total of five runs went well under the over/under line of 7.5.
The two teams meet again Sunday afternoon to conclude the three-game series. Detroit will then stay in Boston for a makeup game on Monday before returning home to face Milwaukee. The Red Sox will host Detroit on Monday before beginning a pivotal three-game series with the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
