Chicago White Sox at Athletics

Athletics Look to Extend Winning Ways Against Struggling White Sox

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Athletics will look to capitalize on a favorable matchup Friday when they host the struggling Chicago White Sox in the opener of a three-game series at Sutter Health Park.

The Athletics (10-9) enter having won six of their last nine games, including taking two of three from the Texas Rangers earlier this week. Oakland’s offense, which scored 12 runs in a win over Houston on April 5, will face White Sox right-hander Davis Martin (2-1, 4.15 ERA). Martin has been serviceable but will need support from a Chicago bullpen that has been heavily taxed.

The White Sox (6-13) arrive mired in a slump, having lost eight of their last ten games. They were just swept in a three-game set by the Tampa Bay Rays at home, where they were outscored 21-11. Offense has been a persistent issue; Chicago has been shut out three times already this season and scored three or fewer runs in 12 of its 19 games.

Oakland will counter with right-hander Aaron Civale (2-0, 3.68 ERA), who has provided stability to the rotation. A player to watch for the Athletics is left-hander Jacob Lopez, who has transitioned to a multi-inning relief role. In his last outing Thursday, Lopez threw five innings of two-run ball against Texas, striking out five.

For Chicago, reliever Sean Newcomb is a key figure. The left-hander has been a frequent presence, making nine appearances already. He was effective in Thursday’s loss, throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Manager Pedro Grifol will likely need him again if the White Sox are to keep the game close.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the Athletics are projected to win 7-3. has been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The over/under for the game is set at 9 runs.

The series continues Saturday and Sunday before the Athletics embark on a road trip to Seattle. The White Sox will head to Arizona after the weekend for a three-game set with the Diamondbacks.
