Rangers Blank Mariners Behind deGrom, Bullpen
SEATTLE (Interstat) — On a cool Friday night at T-Mobile Park, the Texas Rangers methodically dismantled the Seattle Mariners, securing a 5-0 victory behind a dominant pitching performance that began with Jacob deGrom and was finished by a parade of relievers. A crowd of 28,253 watched as the Rangers’ offense steadily accumulated 15 hits while their pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout, handing the Mariners their fourth consecutive loss.
The most critical juncture of the game arrived not with a thunderous hit, but with a masterful escape. In the bottom of the first inning, Rangers starter Jacob deGrom, making just his third start of the season, immediately found trouble. After a flyout, he walked Cal Raleigh and surrendered a double to Julio Rodríguez. Another walk to Josh Naylor loaded the bases with only one out, threatening to quickly erase the 1-0 lead Brandon Nimmo had provided with a leadoff home run in the top of the inning.
With the heart of Seattle’s order looming and the crowd energized, deGrom summoned the form that has made him a two-time Cy Young Award winner. He aggressively attacked Randy Arozarena, striking him out swinging on a high fastball. He then repeated the feat against Luke Raley, fanning him on a slider in the dirt to strand all three runners. That sequence, a display of elite composure and stuff under maximum pressure, set the tone for the entire evening. It deflated the Mariners and provided the Rangers’ bullpen with a pristine slate to protect.
From that point forward, deGrom was in command. He worked four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out three. He handed the game to the bullpen with the lead intact, and the relief corps was flawless. Gavin Collyer, Cole Winn, Jacob Latz, Jalen Beeks and Tyler Alexander combined for five innings of two-hit, scoreless baseball, striking out four. Collyer earned the win for his 1 1/3 innings of work.
The Rangers’ offense, meanwhile, chipped away at Seattle starter Logan Gilbert and the Mariners’ bullpen. After Nimmo’s first-pitch homer, they added a run in the third when Corey Seager doubled and scored on Wyatt Langford’s single. They made it 3-0 in the seventh on an RBI single from Jake Burger that scored Seager, who had doubled for the second time in the game.
Texas put the game fully out of reach in the ninth against reliever Casey Legumina. Langford and Burger singled, and after a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly from Andrew McCutchen brought in one run, Josh Jung delivered the final blow. Jung laced his third double of the night into left field, scoring Burger to provide the final 5-0 margin. Jung finished 3 for 5 with an RBI, continuing his hot streak, while Seager went 2 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Gilbert took the loss for Seattle, his third of the season. He battled for 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, striking out seven but ultimately succumbing to the Rangers’ relentless lineup. The Mariners’ offense never recovered from deGrom’s first-inning stand, going 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and leaving eight men on base. Their best subsequent chance came in the sixth, when Josh Naylor singled and was thrown out at the plate trying to score on J.P. Crawford’s single, a perfect relay from Langford in left field to catcher Danny Jansen.
The victory improved Texas to 11-9 on the season, moving them two games above .500 as they continued a road trip. The Rangers have now taken four straight games from the Mariners in 2026, having swept a three-game series in Arlington earlier in the month. Seattle fell to 8-13, sinking deeper into last place in the American League West. The game time was 3 hours, 8 minutes.
The result defied pregame projections. Interstat’s ELO system had given Seattle a 55.9% probability to win, and the Mariners were installed as a 1.5-run favorite. The total of five runs went under the over/under line of 6.5, a testament to the Rangers’ pitching dominance.
Texas will look to secure the series win on Saturday, while Seattle will aim to halt its skid and find offensive answers against a Rangers staff that has stifled them consistently this year.
