Giants Break Out of Slump, Rout Nationals Behind Ramos, Webb
WASHINGTON (Interstat) — Heliot Ramos launched a three-run homer in a six-run second inning, Logan Webb delivered six workmanlike frames and the San Francisco Giants’ slumbering offense erupted for a 10-5 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday night at Nationals Park.
The Giants, who had scored three runs or fewer in each of their previous five games, pounded out 15 hits to snap a three-game skid and improve to 8-12. Washington fell to 9-11.
The most important sequence of the game arrived early and decisively. After a quiet first inning, the Giants batted around in the second against Nationals starter Zack Littell, transforming a scoreless tie into a commanding lead. The rally began with back-to-back singles by Casey Schmitt and Jung Hoo Lee. Ramos then provided the pivotal blow, driving a 1-0 offering deep to center field for his first home run of the season, staking San Francisco to a 3-0 advantage.
The Giants were far from finished. Daniel Susac and Drew Gilbert followed with a single and a walk, respectively, and Willy Adames loaded the bases with another single. After a force out at home, Matt Chapman cleared the bases with a two-run single to center. Rafael Devers capped the outburst with an RBI double, plating Chapman to complete the six-run inning and chase Littell.
Littell took the loss, falling to 0-2 after allowing six runs on seven hits in just 1 1/3 innings.
Webb, meanwhile, weathered occasional trouble to earn his second win. The Nationals got a run back in the third on a Brady House force out and trimmed the deficit to 6-3 in the fourth on a two-run homer by Daylen Lile, his first of the year. Webb limited further damage, however, stranding a runner in scoring position that inning. He finished his night having allowed four runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out six over six innings.
San Francisco immediately answered Washington’s fourth-inning rally. Leading off the top of the fifth, Drew Gilbert connected for his first homer of the season, a solo shot to right-center. Adames followed with a double and later scored on Chapman’s second RBI single of the night, restoring a five-run cushion at 8-3.
The teams traded solo homers in the seventh, with Schmitt going deep for the Giants and James Wood answering for the Nationals, making it 9-5.
The Giants added an insurance run in the ninth without a hit. Ramos drew a bases-loaded walk, his fourth RBI of the night, to cap the scoring.
Webb improved to 2-2. Beyond Ramos’s key homer, Chapman finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs, while Schmitt and Gilbert each homered. For Washington, José Tena went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Lile drove in two with his homer.
The Nationals threatened in the eighth, putting two on with one out, but reliever Blade Tidwell induced an inning-ending strikeout. Caleb Kilian and Tidwell combined for three scoreless innings of relief to seal the win.
The game, played in 2 hours and 48 minutes before a crowd of 25,108, saw the combined score of 15 surpass the pregame over/under line of 8. The result defied the projection of Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 5-3 Nationals victory, though the Giants entered as slight betting favorites.
San Francisco will look to build on the offensive breakout as the series continues Saturday. Washington aims to even the set before welcoming the Atlanta Braves for a four-game series beginning Monday.
