Seattle Mariners at San Diego Padres
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The Seattle Mariners look to build on a dramatic series win when they face the San Diego Padres in the finale of a brief two-game set Wednesday night at PETCO Park.
The Mariners (8-9) edged the Padres 1-0 on Tuesday, snapping San Diego’s four-game winning streak. Seattle arrives having won four of its last five, taking three of four from the Houston Astros before the trip south. First baseman Josh Naylor powered Monday’s 6-2 win over Houston, going 2 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs.
Naylor, a key player to watch for Seattle, has been inconsistent but potent. He is batting .167 (5 for 30) over his last 10 games, but six of his seven hits in that span have gone for extra bases, including three homers and eight RBIs.
The Padres (10-6), who still hold the best record in the National League West, will turn to right-hander Nick Pivetta. Used in a multi-inning relief role, Pivetta has been excellent in two of his last three outings. On April 12 against Colorado, he threw three perfect innings with four strikeouts. In his last five appearances spanning 17 innings, he has a 3.18 ERA with 24 strikeouts.
Seattle’s recent surge contrasts with a 1-5 road trip through Texas and Los Angeles earlier in the month. San Diego has been strong at home, going 7-3 at PETCO Park this season.
According to Interstat, the Padres are projected favorites with a 53.9% probability to win. Their game simulator predicts a 7-4 San Diego victory. The over/under is set at 7.5 runs, with Seattle installed as a -1.5 run favorite on the spread.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. PDT under clear skies with a game-time temperature of 65 degrees.
After the series, the Mariners return home to face the Texas Rangers for a four-game series starting Friday. The Padres head north to begin a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.
