Imanaga Dominates as Cubs Rout Phillies to Take Series
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — Shota Imanaga delivered a masterclass in pitching dominance and Nico Hoerner powered a relentless offensive attack as the Chicago Cubs claimed the series with an emphatic 11-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park.
Imanaga, the Cubs’ top star, struck out 11 over six innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits and walking none. His performance stifled a Phillies lineup that had erupted for 13 runs just two nights prior and provided the foundation for the Cubs to even their season record at 9-9. The Phillies fell to 8-10.
The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the top of the fifth inning, transforming a manageable deficit into a decisive rout. Leading 3-1, the Cubs ignited against Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo. Pete Crow-Armstrong led off with a single and Matt Shaw followed with his second double of the night. Hoerner then stepped in and launched a three-run homer to center field, his second of the year, to break the game open at 6-1. That blast chased Luzardo and effectively extinguished any hope of a Philadelphia comeback, setting the stage for a lopsided finish.
Hoerner’s big swing was just the beginning of his historic night. He finished 3 for 5 with a career-high five RBIs. Shaw continued his torrid series, adding two more doubles in the sixth inning to finish 3 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs. Dansby Swanson also homered, a solo shot in the seventh, as part of a 3-for-5, two-RBI performance.
The Cubs’ offense, held to five total hits in Imanaga’s previous start, erupted for 15 hits, scoring in five separate innings. After Hoerner’s RBI single plated Shaw in the third, the fifth-inning homer sparked the onslaught. The Cubs sent nine men to the plate in a four-run sixth, keyed by Shaw’s two-run double and Hoerner’s two-run single, to push the lead to 10-1.
Philadelphia’s offense, outside of two solo home runs, was nonexistent against Imanaga and the Cubs’ bullpen. Trea Turner led off the bottom of the first with his second homer of the season, providing a brief 1-0 lead. Bryce Harper added a solo homer in the ninth off reliever Luke Little for the final margin. The Phillies managed only five hits total, with Adolis García’s fourth-inning double their only other extra-base hit.
Imanaga’s outing was a stark rebound from his last start, a hard-luck 2-0 complete-game loss to Pittsburgh where he allowed no earned runs. He overpowered Phillies hitters, recording eight of his 11 strikeouts in the first four innings. His season ERA now sits at a minuscule 0.86. Ben Brown followed with two perfect innings of relief before Little closed it out in the ninth.
Luzardo took the loss for Philadelphia, falling to 1-3 after surrendering six runs on eight hits in four-plus innings. The Phillies’ bullpen fared little better, with Dylan Moore allowing an unearned run in the ninth on a Swanson groundout.
The victory gave the Cubs the rubber match of the three-game set after the teams split the first two games in high-scoring fashion. The two clubs are scheduled to meet again for a four-game series beginning Monday in Chicago.
The game, played in 2 hours and 37 minutes before a crowd of 38,254, defied pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 5-3 Phillies victory, with Philadelphia given a 54.6% probability to win as a 1.5-run favorite. The combined 13 runs sailed over the posted over/under line of 8.
Chicago now returns home to Wrigley Field to begin a three-game series with the New York Mets on Friday. The Phillies will remain at home to host the Atlanta Braves for three games starting the same day.
