Diamondbacks Outlast Orioles in 10 Innings Behind Del Castillo’s Five RBIs
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Adrian Del Castillo launched a two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning, capping a five-RBI performance and lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 8-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday afternoon at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
The decisive blow came off Orioles reliever Tyler Wells. With automatic runner Corbin Carroll on third and one out, Del Castillo drove a 1-0 pitch deep to center field, breaking a 5-5 deadlock and sending the Diamondbacks to a series win.
Arizona added an insurance run later in the inning on an RBI single by Nolan Arenado, providing a cushion for closer Juan Morillo, who worked a perfect bottom of the 10th to secure the save before an announced crowd of 17,028.
The game, which lasted 2 hours and 47 minutes, saw the Diamondbacks finish a challenging nine-game road trip with a 6-3 record, taking two of three from the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies and Orioles. Arizona improved to 11-8, while Baltimore fell to .500 at 9-9, suffering consecutive losses for the first time since being swept in Pittsburgh from April 3-5.
The contest was a back-and-forth affair from the start. Baltimore struck first in the second inning on an RBI double by Sam Huff, scoring Coby Mayo. Arizona answered forcefully in the third. After two quick outs, Carroll walked and Geraldo Perdomo singled, setting the stage for Del Castillo’s first big hit—a two-run triple that caromed off the glove of left fielder Weston Wilson in deep left-center field.
The Orioles halved the deficit in their half of the third on an RBI single by Jeremiah Jackson, making it 2-1. Arizona extended its lead to 3-1 in the fourth on an RBI double by Jorge Barrosa, but Baltimore’s Jackson delivered the game’s biggest swing to that point in the fifth. Following a two-out single by Weston Wilson, Jackson connected for a two-run homer off Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez, a line drive to left-center that gave the Orioles a 4-3 advantage.
The Diamondbacks chipped away, tying the game at 4-4 in the sixth on a productive groundout by Alek Thomas and regaining a 5-4 lead in the seventh on a groundout by Del Castillo that scored Ketel Marte.
Baltimore refused to go quietly, tying the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh. Gunnar Henderson led off with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on a two-out RBI single by pinch-hitter Leody Taveras against Arizona reliever Kevin Ginkel.
Both bullpens then took over. Ryan Helsley, Anthony Nunez, and Wells for Baltimore, and Taylor Clarke, Ryan Thompson, and Ginkel for Arizona exchanged zeros through the eighth and ninth innings, forcing extras.
In the 10th, Wells retired Perdomo on a sacrifice bunt, moving Carroll to third. That brought up Del Castillo, who entered the game hitting just .214 over his previous five contests. The catcher, who had already driven in three runs, fell behind 0-1 before crushing the next offering for his first home run of the season, a no-doubt shot that decided the game.
Ryan Thompson earned the win for Arizona with a scoreless ninth inning, his record moving to 1-0. Wells took the loss for Baltimore, falling to 0-1. Morillo’s save was his first.
Beyond Del Castillo’s heroics, Jackson stood out for the Orioles, finishing 2-for-5 with the homer and three RBIs. Arizona out-hit Baltimore 13-8. The result defied the pregame projections, as Baltimore had been installed as a 1.5-run favorite, and the total of 13 runs sailed over the posted over/under line of 8.5.
The Diamondbacks now return home to open a series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. The Orioles embark on a road trip, starting with a four-game set against the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday.
