Orioles Ride Early Homer, Strong Pitching to Series Win Over Giants
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Cade Povich delivered a commanding performance on the mound, and the Baltimore Orioles’ offense provided timely support to secure a series victory Sunday, defeating the San Francisco Giants 6-2 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
A crowd of 24,091 watched the Orioles (8-7) climb above .500 for the first time since opening day, winning for the fifth time in six games. The Giants (6-10) dropped the final two games of the three-game set after winning the opener Friday.
The pivotal sequence arrived in the bottom of the fifth inning, transforming a tied game into a comfortable Baltimore lead. The Giants had just scratched across a run in the top half to knot the score at 2-2, but the Orioles responded immediately against San Francisco starter Adrian Houser. Gunnar Henderson and Taylor Ward singled to put runners on the corners with two outs for Pete Alonso. The veteran first baseman, who had walked and scored on Samuel Basallo’s first-inning homer, laced a double down the left-field line, clearing the bases and putting Baltimore ahead 4-2.
That two-run double broke the game open and chased Houser, who took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings. It also provided ample cushion for Povich, who was in complete control. The left-hander earned his first win of the season, stifling the Giants’ lineup over 6 2/3 strong innings. He surrendered just one run on five hits, striking out five and walking none. His effort was a sharp rebound from his previous start in Pittsburgh.
Povich faced minimal trouble after the Giants’ fifth-inning run. He worked around a two-out double by Heliot Ramos in the seventh before handing the ball to the bullpen. Tyler Wells allowed a solo homer to Casey Schmitt in the ninth but otherwise closed out the game, with Anthony Nunez recording the final out.
The Orioles’ offense, which produced 11 hits, added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Leody Taveras led off the sixth with a double and scored on a Coby Mayo single to make it 5-2. In the seventh, a soft RBI infield single by Colton Cowser plated Taylor Ward, who had singled and moved to third on another Alonso hit, extending the lead to 6-2.
San Francisco’s offense, limited to seven hits, struggled to sustain rallies. Schmitt was a bright spot, going 3 for 4 with a solo home run off the left-field foul pole in the ninth inning. His fifth-inning single also started the Giants’ only other scoring rally, as he came around on a two-out single by Daniel Susac.
Beyond Povich’s outing, key performances for Baltimore included Basallo, whose two-run homer in the first gave the Orioles an early lead, and Alonso, who finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. The Giants’ bullpen, aside from Ryan Walker allowing a run in the seventh, was effective, with JT Brubaker and Erik Miller combining for 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
The game, which lasted 2 hours, 46 minutes, saw the total score of 8 surpass the pregame over/under line of 8.5. The Orioles, installed as 1.5-run favorites, covered the spread.
Baltimore now looks ahead to a three-game series at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks beginning Monday. The Giants continue their road trip with a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds starting Tuesday.
