Athletics at New York Mets
NEW YORK (Interstat) — The Athletics will look to build on a dramatic, pitching-fueled victory in the Bronx when they continue their road trip against the New York Mets on Saturday evening at Citi Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. EDT under cloudy skies with a temperature around 54 degrees.
The Athletics (5-7) edged the Mets 1-0 in the series opener Friday afternoon, one day after a 1-0 win over the New York Yankees. Oakland’s pitching staff has allowed just two runs over its last three games.
A key to that surge has been left-hander Jeffrey Springs, who is emerging as a player to watch. In his last start Thursday, he fired seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out six in the win over the Yankees. Over his last three outings, he has a 1.59 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 18.1 innings.
He will not pitch Saturday, however. The Athletics are slated to start left-hander Jacob Lopez (0-1), while the Mets counter with right-hander Kodai Senga (0-1).
The Mets (7-6) aim to rebound after being shut out Friday and dropping two of three to the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier in the week. A bright spot in the series loss was rookie Nolan McLean, who will be a player to watch for New York. In a tough-luck loss Thursday, McLean struck out eight and allowed two earned runs over 6.1 innings. In two starts this season, he has 16 strikeouts in 11.1 innings.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the Athletics are projected to win 6-4. Betting markets list the Mets as a 1.5-run favorite with an over/under of 8 runs.
Following Saturday’s game, the series concludes Sunday before heads home to face the Texas Rangers. The Mets embark on a West Coast trip Monday, starting with a three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
