Bubic Dominates With 11 Strikeouts as Royals Shut Out White Sox
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — In a brisk pitchers’ duel that defied pregame projections, Kris Bubic delivered a dominant performance, striking out 11 over seven shutout innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 2-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night at Kauffman Stadium.
A crowd of 12,907 watched as Bubic and White Sox starter Davis Martin engaged in a tense, scoreless battle through the first three innings. The game’s first significant action came in the top of the first when a successful challenge by Royals catcher Salvador Perez turned a ball into a called third strike on Chicago’s Chase Meidroth, setting an early tone of Royals’ defensive precision.
The stalemate was broken in the bottom of the fourth. Maikel Garcia ignited the rally with a sharp line-drive single to right field. Bobby Witt Jr. followed by lacing a double down the left-field line, scoring Garcia easily from first to give Kansas City a 1-0 lead. Martin limited the damage, inducing a sharp lineout and two popouts to strand Witt at third.
Chicago’s best scoring chance came in the fifth inning against Bubic. Lenyn Sosa led off with a double to left field, representing just the second White Sox hit. Bubic, however, rose to the occasion. He got Colson Montgomery to line out to shortstop, popped up Luisangel Acuña, and struck out Tanner Murray swinging to leave Sosa stranded at second.
The White Sox threatened again in the sixth when Derek Hill led off with a single. Bubic responded by striking out Meidroth, getting a groundout, and then punctuating the inning by striking out Munetaka Murakami on a foul tip to end the frame.
Kansas City provided a crucial insurance run in the seventh. Leading off the inning, designated hitter Carter Jensen connected on a solo home run, his fourth of the season, launching a fly ball over the right-field wall to extend the Royals’ lead to 2-0. Michael Massey followed with a double, but Martin retired the next two batters to finish his night after seven innings of two-run ball.
The most important part of the game was Bubic’s masterful response to adversity in the fifth and sixth innings. After surrendering a leadoff double, he shut down the heart of Chicago’s order without letting the runner advance. An inning later, after a leadoff single, he recorded three outs without letting the ball leave the infield, including two more strikeouts. These shutdown innings preserved a narrow one-run lead and demoralized the White Sox offense, which managed only two hits all night.
The Royals’ bullpen sealed the victory with perfect efficiency. Matt Strahm worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, and Lucas Erceg did the same in the ninth, earning his fourth save of the season by retiring the side in order.
Bubic earned the win, improving to 2-1. His line of seven innings, two hits, no runs, and 11 strikeouts marked a dramatic rebound from his previous start, a loss to Milwaukee where he allowed four earned runs. Martin was the hard-luck loser, falling to 2-1 despite a quality start of seven innings, seven hits, and two earned runs with three strikeouts.
The victory evened the four-game series at one apiece after the White Sox won 2-0 on Thursday. Kansas City improved to 6-8 on the season, while Chicago fell to 5-9. The game concluded in a swift 1 hour, 55 minutes, a stark contrast to the pregame statistical projection of a 4-3 Royals win and a combined run total that shattered the over/under line of 8.5.
The two teams will continue their series Saturday at Kauffman Stadium.
