Bogaerts’ Grand Slam Lifts Padres Over Rockies in 12 Innings

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Xander Bogaerts launched a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 12th inning Thursday night, capping a marathon and delivering the San Diego Padres a dramatic 7-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies at PETCO Park.

In a game defined by missed opportunities and clutch relief pitching, Bogaerts’ one-out blast off Rockies reliever Valente Bellozo on a 2-1 pitch shattered a 3-3 deadlock and sent a crowd of 41,390 home after a 3-hour, 52-minute battle. The slam, Bogaerts’ second of the season, came after Bellozo intentionally walked both Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado to load the bases following a sacrifice bunt.

The stunning finish gave the Padres their seventh win against six losses, moving them above .500, while the Rockies fell to 6-7, halting momentum from a three-game sweep of Houston earlier in the week.

For eleven-and-a-half innings, the contest was a tense, low-scoring affair dominated by pitching and defense. Rockies starter Chase Dollander set the tone early, working five strong innings and allowing just one run on four hits. His counterpart, Randy Vásquez, was equally effective for San Diego, navigating six innings while surrendering only one run on Brenton Doyle’s solo home run to center field in the third.

That homer gave Colorado a 1-0 lead, which was quickly answered in the bottom half. Freddy Fermin singled, advanced to third on a Jake Cronenworth single, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Fernando Tatis Jr., knotting the game at 1-1.

From there, both bullpens took control. The Rockies’ Jaden Hill, Victor Vodnik, and Jimmy Herget combined for three scoreless frames from the sixth through the eighth, stranding Padres in scoring position. San Diego’s bullpen, led by Bradgley Rodriguez and Mason Miller, matched them zero for zero, forcing the game into extra innings.

The automatic runner rule then ignited a back-and-forth struggle. In the top of the 10th, Colorado’s Willi Castro, placed at second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a two-out RBI single by Tyler Freeman off David Morgan. The Rockies’ 2-1 lead was short-lived.

In the bottom of the inning, Cronenworth, the automatic runner, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a sacrifice fly by Machado, again tying the game.

Colorado reclaimed the lead in the 11th. Kyle Karros, the automatic runner, scored on a ringing double to right by Brett Sullivan, making it 3-2. Once more, San Diego had an answer. With Xander Bogaerts as the runner at second, Gavin Sheets singled to put runners at the corners. After two outs, Luis Campusano delivered a clutch double down the left-field line, plating Bogaerts to even the score at 3-3.

The Rockies threatened in the top of the 12th, putting runners at first and second with one out, but Morgan induced a groundout from Karros to escape.

In the decisive bottom of the 12th, Cronenworth began the inning at second. Tatis’ sacrifice bunt moved him to third, prompting Colorado manager to intentionally walk Merrill and then Machado to set up a force at any base and a potential double play.

Bellozo fell behind Bogaerts 2-0, fought back to 2-1, and then left a pitch over the heart of the plate. Bogaerts drove it deep to left field, a no-doubt shot that ended the game instantly and emphatically.

The loss wasted a 10-hit effort by the Rockies’ offense, which went 3 for 14 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base. Doyle led Colorado with three hits, including the homer. The Padres managed nine hits, with Bogaerts’ grand slam accounting for his only hit in six at-bats, but it was the decisive blow.

Morgan earned the win, his first of the season, despite allowing the inherited runner to score in the 11th. Bellozo took the loss, his first.

The two teams continue their four-game series Friday night at PETCO Park.
