Henderson’s Eighth-Inning Homer Lifts Orioles Past White Sox
CHICAGO (Interstat) — Gunnar Henderson’s tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning powered the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field, extending their winning streak over Chicago to eight games.
In a contest defined by missed opportunities and strong pitching, the Orioles finally broke through against the White Sox bullpen to secure the win and even their season record at 5-6. The White Sox fell to 4-7.
The game’s pivotal sequence came in the top of the eighth with the score tied 2-2. Facing reliever Jordan Hicks, Blaze Alexander sparked the rally with a one-out double to right field. Taylor Ward followed by lashing another double to right, easily scoring Alexander to put Baltimore ahead. Henderson then stepped in and delivered the decisive blow, driving a Hicks offering to right-center field for a two-run homer, his fourth of the season, to provide critical insurance runs.
That outburst made a winner of Yennier Cano, who pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief. Cano (1-1) struck out one. Ryan Helsley closed it out in the ninth, striking out two in a scoreless frame for his fourth save.
The late offense overshadowed a masterful pitchers’ duel for much of the chilly evening. White Sox starter Shane Smith was brilliant but inefficient, striking out eight and allowing just one hit over 3 2/3 scoreless innings. He was matched by Baltimore’s Trevor Rogers, who turned in a quality start to keep his team within striking distance. Rogers went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six.
Chicago struck first in the third inning against Rogers. Derek Hill started the rally with a single and scored on Chase Meidroth’s run-scoring double. Meidroth then came home on a Lenyn Sosa single to center, giving the White Sox a 2-0 lead.
Baltimore chipped away in the fifth. Samuel Basallo walked and Tyler O’Neill singled, putting two on with no outs. After a groundout advanced both runners, Ryan Mountcastle grounded out to shortstop, allowing Basallo to score and cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Orioles squandered numerous chances to score earlier, stranding 14 runners on base. They loaded the bases in the second and fourth innings but failed to score, with White Sox pitchers repeatedly working out of jams.
The Baltimore bullpen combination of Grant Wolfram, Anthony Nunez, Cano and Helsley was flawless, retiring all 10 batters they faced over the final 3 1/3 innings and striking out six.
Hicks (0-1) took the loss for Chicago, charged with three runs in his one inning of work.
Henderson, O’Neill and Alexander each had two of Baltimore’s eight hits. Meidroth led the White Sox with two hits and an RBI.
The victory continued Baltimore’s recent dominance of the White Sox, setting up the series finale on Wednesday. The Orioles will look for a series sweep before returning home to face the San Francisco Giants. The White Sox will conclude their series with Baltimore before embarking on a road trip to Kansas City.
