Braves Fall to Diamondbacks in 10 Innings After Late Rally
PHOENIX (Interstat) — Ketel Marte lined a walk-off double into the right-field corner in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday afternoon, lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves in a back-and-forth contest at Chase Field.
The win, secured before a crowd of 25,814, gave the Diamondbacks a series split after dropping the first two games of the four-game set. It pushed both teams to an even 5-5 record on the young season, while Atlanta fell to 6-4.
The decisive rally began with the automatic runner, Jorge Barrosa, placed on second base. After Robert Suarez struck out the side in a dominant ninth inning for Atlanta, Dylan Lee took over for the 10th. Marte, who had doubled and scored in the first inning, attacked Lee’s first pitch, driving it past a diving Mike Yastrzemski in right field. Barrosa scored easily, setting off a celebration at home plate.
The contest was a taut affair featuring five ties or lead changes, culminating in Arizona’s first extra-inning win of the year. The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the late innings, transforming a potential Atlanta road victory into a frustrating defeat.
After the Braves had reclaimed a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth on Drake Baldwin’s fourth RBI single of the afternoon, Atlanta turned to Suarez to close it out. The reliever was electric, fanning all three Diamondbacks he faced in the bottom of the frame to force extras. However, the Braves squandered a prime opportunity in the top of the 10th. With their own automatic runner, Michael Harris II, on second and no outs, they failed to advance him, as Ozzie Albies grounded out, Mauricio Dubón grounded out sharply, and Austin Riley flied out.
That failure proved costly, setting the stage for Marte’s heroics against Lee, who was charged with the unearned run. Taylor Rashi earned the win for Arizona with a scoreless top of the 10th, while Atlanta’s Joel Payamps was tagged with the loss, having allowed the inherited runner to score.
The game’s momentum swung persistently. Atlanta struck first in the opening inning when Baldwin launched a solo home run, his fourth of the season, to right-center off Arizona starter Taylor Clarke. Arizona answered in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly from Geraldo Perdomo, scoring Marte after his leadoff double.
The Diamondbacks grabbed their first lead in the fourth. Following a single by Corbin Carroll and a sacrifice bunt, Ildemaro Vargas drilled a two-run triple into the right-field corner off Braves starter Tyler Kinley, putting Arizona ahead 3-1.
Atlanta responded immediately in the fifth. Dubón led off with a ground-rule double, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a single by Baldwin. That hit, which also plated Jorge Mateo, tied the game at 3-3. Arizona nudged back ahead in the sixth on an RBI single from Nolan Arenado, scoring Carroll to make it 4-3.
The Braves tied it again in the seventh without the benefit of a hit. Mateo led off with a ground-rule double, and Ronald Acuña Jr. reached on a throwing error by Arenado. Baldwin then grounded out to second, allowing Mateo to score the tying run.
Arizona’s answer came swiftly in the bottom of the seventh. Jorge Barrosa doubled with one out and scored when Carroll tripled into the right-field corner, restoring Arizona’s lead at 5-4. That set the table for the dramatic final acts.
Baldwin was the offensive standout for Atlanta, finishing 3 for 5 with the home run and four RBIs. Acuña Jr. and Mateo each had two of Atlanta’s 11 hits. For Arizona, Marte’s two doubles led their nine-hit attack, with Carroll, Barrosa, and Vargas each contributing key extra-base hits.
The loss spoiled a strong collective effort from Atlanta’s bullpen until the final frame, particularly the standout ninth inning from Suarez. The game lasted 2 hours, 55 minutes.
The Braves now head to Anaheim to begin a three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. The Diamondbacks enjoy an off-day before opening a three-game set at the New York Mets on Tuesday.
