White Sox Blank Blue Jays to Earn Series Sweep
CHICAGO (Interstat) — Davis Martin delivered six dominant innings and the Chicago White Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays with a 3-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field.
A crowd of 22,326 watched the White Sox, defying pregame projections that heavily favored Toronto, methodically build an early lead and rely on a quartet of relievers to secure the series sweep. Both teams moved to 4-5 on the young season.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the top of the seventh inning, with the White Sox clinging to their 3-0 lead. Toronto, which had been stifled by Martin, finally threatened against the Chicago bullpen. Daulton Varsho led off with a single against Bryan Hudson, and Ernie Clement followed with another single, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. Hudson struck out Andrés Giménez on a line drive to center, but was then replaced by Jordan Leasure.
The right-hander Leasure faced the heart of a desperate Toronto order. He struck out catcher Brandon Valenzuela swinging on a high fastball for the second out. That brought up veteran George Springer, representing the tying run. In a tense, seven-pitch battle, Leasure finally prevailed, getting Springer to swing through a slider in the dirt for a clutch strikeout, stranding both runners and extinguishing Toronto’s best and only serious scoring chance of the day.
The game was ultimately defined by Martin’s command. The right-hander, now 2-0, scattered four hits, walked two and struck out six over his six scoreless frames. He efficiently navigated minor trouble, most notably in the third inning when Toronto put runners on second and third with one out after a walk and a single. Martin induced a force out from Nathan Lukes and, after walking Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to load the bases, got Addison Barger to ground out to shortstop to end the threat.
Chicago’s offense provided just enough support, scoring single runs in the first, third and fourth innings off Toronto starter Eric Lauer (1-1). In the first, Chase Meidroth led off with a double and scored two batters later on a sharp RBI triple down the left-field line by Miguel Vargas. In the third, Munetaka Murakami walked, advanced on a groundout and scored on an RBI double by Lenyn Sosa. The final run came in the fourth when Luisangel Acuña singled, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single from Austin Hays.
Following Leasure’s pivotal escape act in the seventh, he worked a clean eighth. Closer Chris Murphy then entered for the ninth, issuing a leadoff walk to Kazuma Okamoto. Murphy quickly settled, getting Varsho to pop out and Ernie Clement to foul out to first base. He then sealed his first save of the season by striking out Giménez on a foul tip.
Toronto’s bullpen, after Lauer’s short two-inning, two-run start, was excellent in keeping the game close. Joe Mantiply struck out three over 1 1/3 perfect innings, and Spencer Miles added two scoreless frames. The Blue Jays managed six hits but went 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.
The victory extends Chicago’s winning streak to three games following a difficult start to the season that included a 10-0 loss in Miami earlier in the week. For Toronto, the shutout loss marks a frustrating end to a road trip after they had won two of three from Colorado to begin the week. The Blue Jays have now lost four of their last five.
According to pregame simulations from Interstat, Toronto was projected to win with a 66.6% probability and an expected final score of 5-4. The White Sox, installed as +1.5 underdogs, outperformed those metrics significantly. The total of three runs fell well under the over/under line of 8.
The White Sox will open a three-game series at home against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. The Blue Jays return home to Toronto to begin a three-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers, also on Monday.
