San Diego Padres at Boston Red Sox

BOSTON (Interstat) — Two teams seeking to reverse early-season struggles will meet Saturday afternoon when the San Diego Padres visit the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EDT under cloudy skies with a temperature around 65 degrees.

Both clubs enter with identical 2-5 records. The Red Sox evened this series with a 5-2 victory Friday behind a strong start from Sonny Gray.

San Diego will send right-hander Randy Vásquez (1-0) to the mound. Boston counters with left-hander Connelly Early (0-0).

A player to watch for the Padres is right-hander Michael King, who took the loss Friday despite a solid 5 2/3-inning outing. In his previous start, he threw five scoreless innings against Detroit.

For Boston, the spotlight will be on Gray, who earned the win Friday with six innings of two-run ball. His season began with a rougher outing in Cincinnati.

The Padres’ offense, which broke out for seven runs in a win over San Francisco on Wednesday, was quieted by Gray and the Boston bullpen in the series opener. They will look to rebound against Early.

Boston’s offense was sparked Friday by rookie second baseman Marcelo Mayer, who went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs.

According to Interstat, the game simulator projects a narrow 3-2 Padres victory. However, oddsmakers list Boston as a 1.5-run favorite with an over/under of 8 runs.

Following Sunday’s series finale, the Padres head to Pittsburgh for a three-game set. The Red Sox will host Milwaukee for three games before embarking on a road trip.
