New York Mets at San Francisco Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The New York Mets and San Francisco Giants look to steady their early seasons when they open a four-game series Thursday at Oracle Park, a matchup complicated by a forecast of rain and a pair of struggling starting pitchers.

Left-hander David Peterson (0-0) is set to start for the Mets against Giants lefty Robbie Ray (0-1). Both pitchers will be seeking their first win and better command after uneven beginnings.

The Mets (3-3) arrive after a tough 2-1, 11-inning loss in St. Louis on Wednesday, despite a strong outing from Freddy Peralta, who allowed one earned run over 5 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts. Peralta, a key offseason acquisition, has 14 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings across two starts this season and will be a player to watch in this series.

San Francisco (2-4) is coming off a 7-1 defeat in San Diego. Giants starter Adrian Houser, another player to watch, took the loss despite allowing just one earned run in 5 1/3 innings. The Giants’ offense has been inconsistent, scoring three or fewer runs in four of their six games.

Weather could be a factor, with game-time temperatures expected around 57 degrees Fahrenheit and rain in the forecast.

Despite the Giants’ home-field advantage, the Mets have been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The over/under is set at 7 runs. Statistical projections are split: Interstat’s game simulator predicts a 4-3 Mets victory, while its ELO system gives San Francisco a slight 50.4% probability to win.

This series begins a 10-game road trip for the Mets, who will stay in San Francisco through Sunday before heading east. The Giants will host the Mets for four before the Philadelphia Phillies come to town for a three-game set next week.
