Cubs Power Past Angels Behind Boyd’s 10-Strikeout Performance
CHICAGO (Interstat) — A dominant starting performance from Matthew Boyd and a five-run third inning propelled the Chicago Cubs to a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday afternoon at Wrigley Field, earning a split of the two-game series.
Boyd, coming off a rough outing in his season debut, was masterful over 5 2/3 innings. The left-hander struck out 10 Angels batters while allowing just two hits and one earned run. He walked one. His command of the strike zone set the tone, as the Angels managed only a first-inning single by Zach Neto against him until the sixth.
The game’s decisive moment came in the bottom of the third inning against Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi. With the Cubs trailing 2-0, the lineup erupted. Miguel Amaya worked a leadoff walk and scored on Nico Hoerner’s RBI double. Alex Bregman followed with a single to tie the game. After an error extended the inning, the Cubs capitalized. Dansby Swanson lifted a sacrifice fly to give Chicago the lead, and Matt Shaw delivered a two-out, run-scoring single. Pete Crow-Armstrong capped the rally with another RBI single, plating the fifth run of the frame.
The Angels, held to four hits total, broke through against Boyd in the sixth. Neto singled and Mike Trout walked. Jo Adell then drove an RBI single up the middle, and a second run scored on a fielding error by Bregman at third base. That chased Boyd, but reliever Hunter Harvey entered and struck out Yoán Moncada to end the threat with two runners in scoring position.
Chicago’s bullpen sealed the win. Harvey struck out three over 1 1/3 perfect innings. Caleb Thielbar worked a perfect eighth with two strikeouts, and Daniel Palencia allowed a harmless single in the ninth to close it out.
The Cubs added an insurance run in the seventh off Angels reliever Ryan Zeferjahn. Carson Kelly reached on an error by Trout in center field, advanced to third on a Michael Busch single, and scored on Shaw’s second RBI hit of the day.
Hoerner led the Cubs’ 10-hit attack, going 3 for 5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Shaw finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. For the Angels, Neto had two of the team’s four hits and scored a run.
Kikuchi took the loss for Los Angeles, surrendering five runs, all earned, on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out five. Angels reliever Brent Suter provided two scoreless innings of relief, striking out four.
The victory evened the Cubs’ record at 3-3, while the Angels fell to 3-4. The game, played in 2 hours, 44 minutes, was witnessed by a crowd of 25,125 on a cool April afternoon.
The Cubs now head out for a six-game road trip, beginning Friday in Cleveland against the Guardians. The Angels return home to Anaheim to open a three-game series with the Seattle Mariners on Friday.
