Mariners Edge Yankees in 9th on Raleigh’s Walk-Off Single

SEATTLE (Interstat) — Cal Raleigh’s two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday night delivered the Seattle Mariners a tense 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees, snapping the visitors’ three-game winning streak in a pitchers’ duel that defied pregame expectations.

A crowd of 27,291 at T-Mobile Park saw the Mariners improve to 3-2, while the Yankees fell to 3-1 in a game that was a stark contrast to the offensive fireworks projected by simulations. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 6-5 final, but the combined three runs fell well under an over/under line set at 8.

The game’s defining moment came in the home half of the ninth with the score knotted at 1. Facing Yankees reliever Paul Blackburn, Seattle shortstop Leo Rivas led off with a single to right field. After Cole Young, who had three hits, flied out, Brendan Donovan singled to center, moving the speedy Rivas to third base. Blackburn struck out pinch-hitter Cal Raleigh for the second out, bringing Raleigh to the plate. The catcher, entering the game as a defensive replacement earlier, then ripped a 1-2 pitch from Blackburn into right field, scoring Rivas easily and setting off a celebration at first base.

The decisive rally overshadowed a masterful performance from Seattle starter Luis Castillo, who was the game’s top star. Castillo dominated the Yankees’ lineup for six innings, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out seven. He walked two and never allowed a runner to reach third base.

Yankees starter Ryan Weathers was nearly his equal, matching Castillo’s seven strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings while surrendering one run on four hits. The Mariners scratched their only run against him in the second inning. Randy Arozarena led off with a single, Mitch Garver walked, and after two outs, Young delivered a two-out single to right field to score Arozarena.

The Yankees, held to just five hits total, broke through to tie the game in the seventh against the Seattle bullpen. Ben Rice led off with a sharp single to right. Giancarlo Stanton then reached on a fielding error by third baseman Brendan Donovan, putting runners at first and second. Jazz Chisholm Jr. grounded into a forceout, moving Rice to third. Pinch-hitter Amed Rosario then lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center field, scoring Rice to knot the game at 1.

Both bullpens locked down the game from there, setting the stage for the ninth-inning drama. The Yankees threatened in the top of the ninth when Stanton ripped a one-out double off Matt Brash, but Brash induced a soft groundout from Chisholm Jr. and a strikeout from Rosario to strand the go-ahead run at third.

Brash earned the win, moving to 1-0 after a scoreless inning of work. Blackburn took the loss for New York, falling to 0-1 after allowing the ninth-inning run on three hits.

The game was a defensive struggle marked by missed opportunities. Seattle left nine men on base and went 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position. The Yankees were 0 for 4 in such situations and capitalized on one of two Seattle errors for their lone run. New York’s Ryan McMahon also committed a throwing error in the sixth.

Seattle’ bullpen, after Castillo’s exit, provided 3 2/3 innings of one-run ball. Eduard Bazardo, Gabe Speier, Jose A. Ferrer and Brash combined to allow just two hits. For New York, the relief corps of Jake Bird, Fernando Cruz and Camilo Doval pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings before Blackburn entered in the ninth.

The victory gives Seattle momentum heading into the second game of the series Tuesday. The Yankees will look to even the series behind their potent lineup, which was held in check for the first time this young season after sweeping three games in San Francisco prior to arriving in Seattle.
