Blue Jays Complete Sweep of Athletics Behind Strong Pitching, Home Runs
TORONTO (Interstat) — George Springer’s historic leadoff spark and a relentless early offensive push propelled the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-2 victory over the Athletics on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Centre, completing a season-opening three-game sweep before a crowd of 36,484.
Springer launched the 64th leadoff home run of his career, the most in major league history, on the fourth pitch of the game from Athletics starter Luis Morales, immediately setting a dominant tone for the defending American League champions. The Blue Jays never trailed, methodically adding on while their pitching staff, led by starter Eric Lauer, stifled the Athletics’ lineup for most of the afternoon.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the third inning, turning a narrow one-run lead into a more commanding advantage. After Tyler Heineman singled with one out, Springer lined out. Jesús Sánchez then stepped in and connected on a two-run homer to center field, his first with Toronto since joining the club, extending the lead to 3-0. That swing provided crucial breathing room and underscored the lineup’s depth behind its stars.
Toronto continued the power display in the fourth when Japanese rookie Kazuma Okamoto drilled his first major league home run, a solo shot to right-center, making it 4-0. The Blue Jays added their final run in the fifth without the benefit of a hit. Walks to Heineman, Sánchez and Addison Barger forced in a run, with Barger’s free pass pushing the score to 5-0.
Athletics starter Luis Morales bore the brunt of the Toronto offense, surrendering five runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out five, taking the loss to fall to 0-1.
The Athletics’ only offense came in a brief rebuttal in the top of the fifth. Jacob Wilson led off with a double, and two batters later, Max Muncy crushed a two-run homer to right field off Lauer, cutting the deficit to 5-2. It was one of only five hits on the day for Oakland.
That was all the offense the Athletics could muster against Lauer and a parade of effective Toronto relievers. Lauer earned the win, improving to 1-0 after a strong 5 1/3-inning outing. He allowed two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out a season-high nine batters. The Blue Jays bullpen, a hallmark of their 2025 championship run, sealed the deal with 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Braydon Fisher, Mason Fluharty and Tommy Nance navigated through the middle innings before Jeff Hoffman struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to record his first save of the season.
For the Athletics, reliever J.T. Ginn provided a bright spot, tossing 3 2/3 innings of one-hit, shutout ball after replacing Morales, keeping his team within striking distance.
The victory pushes the Blue Jays to a perfect 3-0 start to the 2026 campaign, having won each game of the series by a narrow margin before Sunday’s more decisive finish. The Athletics, meanwhile, head out on the road still searching for their first win, falling to 0-3. Both the game result and the series sweep defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had predicted a 2-1 Athletics victory, though Toronto entered as a heavy favorite with a 65.8% win probability according to the ELO system.
The Blue Jays now welcome the Colorado Rockies for a three-game set beginning Monday. The Athletics continue their arduous opening road trip, heading to Atlanta for a three-game series against the Braves starting Monday.
