Rangers Edge Phillies in 10 Innings After Late Rally

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of fortune that defied pregame projections, the Texas Rangers snatched a 5-4 victory from the Philadelphia Phillies in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park, erasing the bitter taste of a late-game collapse with an extra-inning rally.

The Rangers, who had been shut down in a 5-3 loss to open the season two days prior and were statistically projected for a defeat, instead evened their record at 1-1 by capitalizing in the final frame. The Phillies, installed as betting favorites with a 62% win probability, fell to 1-1 after a dramatic and ultimately futile comeback of their own in front of 40,051 fans.

Texas appeared in complete control for the majority of the brisk, 3-hour, 6-minute contest, staking a claim early and maintaining it behind stellar pitching. Corey Seager announced his presence in the first inning, launching a solo home run to right-center field off Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola for the game’s first run. The lead ballooned to 3-0 in the third when Jake Burger followed a Brandon Nimmo single with a two-run homer to left field.

That was more than enough support for a parade of Texas relievers following an opener. Jacob Latz delivered four perfect innings of relief, striking out three. He was followed by scoreless outings from Jalen Beeks and Robert Garcia, as the Phillies’ offense was stifled into the late innings, managing just three baserunners through eight.

The narrative shifted violently in the bottom of the ninth. With Texas closer Chris Martin on the mound and the Rangers three outs from a 3-0 shutout, Alec Bohm sparked life with a single. After a walk to Edmundo Sosa, Adolis García ripped a run-scoring double to left, ending the shutout bid. Brandon Marsh then delivered the crushing blow, a two-run single to right that knotted the score at 3-3 and sent the home crowd into a frenzy. Martin escaped further damage, but the damage was done.

Undeterred, Texas responded immediately in the top of the 10th against Phillies reliever Jhoan Duran. Automatic runner Brandon Nimmo advanced to third on a Wyatt Langford single. After two strikeouts, Andrew McCutchen, pinch-hitting earlier, came through with a clutch single to left, scoring Langford to reclaim a 4-3 lead. McCutchen aggressively took second on the throw home, and then scored a critical insurance run when Duran’s pickoff attempt sailed into center field for an error.

That extra run proved decisive. In the bottom of the 10th, Texas left-hander Tyler Alexander, tasked with the save, hit Otto Kemp to begin the inning. After a pop out, he struck out Kyle Schwarber for the second out. Bryce Harper then delivered an RBI single, scoring automatic runner J.T. Realmuto to pull Philadelphia within 5-4 and moving the tying run to third. Alexander remained poised, inducing a game-ending pop out from Alec Bohm to secure the victory.

The most important sequence of the game was undoubtedly the Phillies’ three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth, which transformed a dormant, one-sided affair into a nail-biting thriller. After being held to just one hit and mounting no serious threat for eight innings, Philadelphia’s offense erupted with four consecutive batters reaching with two outs against Martin. Bohm’s single, García’s double, and Marsh’s tying single in rapid succession completely altered the game’s trajectory, forcing extra innings and setting the stage for the Rangers’ final rebuttal.

Chris Martin, despite blowing the save, was credited with the win, moving to 1-0. Jhoan Duran took the loss, falling to 0-1 after surrendering the two decisive runs in the 10th. Tyler Alexander earned his first save. Burger led the Texas offense, going 2-for-5 with the pivotal two-run homer, while Seager added two hits, including his solo shot. The Rangers out-hit the Phillies 10 to 5.

The teams will conclude their opening series on Sunday. The Rangers will then travel to Baltimore for a three-game set beginning Monday, while the Phillies will host Washington for three games starting the same day.
