Mets Outslug Pirates in High-Scoring Season Opener

NEW YORK (Interstat) — The New York Mets erupted for five first-inning runs and outlasted the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-7 on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field in a season opener that defied a low-scoring projection.

Brandon Lowe launched a two-run homer in the top of the first for Pittsburgh, but the Mets answered immediately in the bottom half. Brett Baty cleared the bases with a three-run triple and later scored on a Marcus Semien double.

Freddy Peralta earned the win for New York despite allowing four runs over five innings. Paul Skenes took the loss for Pittsburgh. The Mets’ offense produced 11 hits, while the Pirates had 10 in a game that took 3 hours, 8 minutes before an announced crowd of 41,449.
