Royals rout Athletics to clinch winning season

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — Mike Yastrzemski launched two solo home runs and a dominant pitching effort from Cole Ragans and the bullpen propelled the Kansas City Royals to a 9-2 victory over the Athletics in the regular-season finale for both teams Sunday evening at Sutter Health Park.

The win secured a winning season for the Royals, who finished 82-80. The Athletics concluded their campaign at 76-86.

Yastrzemski provided the exclamation points for the Royals’ offense, homering deep to right field in the seventh inning off reliever Michael Kelly and then repeating the feat to right off Osvaldo Bido in the eighth. The veteran outfielder, acquired from the San Francisco Giants at the trade deadline, finished the season with 17 home runs, nine of which came with Kansas City.

His seventh-inning blast was immediately followed by a home run from catcher Carter Jensen, part of a four-run inning that broke the game open.

The Royals’ offense was relentless, amassing 15 hits. Michael Massey led the charge with a four-hit day, while Jensen contributed three hits. Maikel Garcia and Bobby Witt Jr. each drove in two runs.

Kansas City methodically built its lead, scoring single runs in the second and fifth innings, two in the fourth, the four-spot in the seventh, and Yastrzemski’s final homer in the eighth.

The Athletics’ bats were largely silenced until the eighth inning, when they avoided a shutout. Colby Thomas doubled and Nick Kurtz followed with a two-run homer to left-center field, his 36th of the season.

That was the only blemish on an otherwise stellar day for Kansas City pitching. Starter Cole Ragans was electric, though he fell one out shy of qualifying for the win. Over 4 1/3 innings, the left-hander allowed just two hits and struck out eight, walking one and holding the Athletics scoreless.

The win instead went to reliever Daniel Lynch IV, who improved to 6-2. Lynch entered the game in the fifth inning with two on and two out and preserved the Royals’ lead, ultimately pitching 2 1/3 perfect innings and striking out three.

Athletics opener Brady Basso took the loss, dropping his record to 1-1. Basso worked the first inning, allowing a leadoff double to Garcia but nothing else.

The Royals took an early lead in the second inning. Jensen and Massey singled, and after a walk loaded the bases, Garcia lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Jensen.

Kansas City doubled its advantage in the fourth. Adam Frazier singled and scored when Massey singled to right field and Athletics right fielder JJ Bleday committed a fielding error, allowing Massey to take third. Garcia then singled him home.

The lead grew to 4-0 in the fifth. Jensen and Frazier singled, and Massey delivered again with an RBI single to left field.

The game was put out of reach in the seventh. Yastrzemski and Jensen hit back-to-back home runs to make it 6-0. Later in the inning, with two on, Witt Jr. laced a two-run double to left field to cap the scoring in the frame.

After Yastrzemski’s second homer made it 9-0 in the eighth, the Athletics finally got on the board with Kurtz’s two-run shot.

The game was played in two hours, 44 minutes before an announced crowd of 8,754. The combined 11 runs fell under the pregame over/under line of 9.5. The victory gave the Royals a 2-1 series win after the teams split the first two games of the weekend set.
