Kansas City Royals at Oakland Athletics
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — Michael Wacha pitched six scoreless innings to earn his 10th win of the season, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Athletics 4-2 on Saturday night at Sutter Health Park.
Wacha (10-13) gave up two hits and three walks while striking out five for his first win in more than three weeks. It’s the fourth consecutive year and sixth time in his 13 major league seasons that Wacha has won 10 or more games.
Vinnie Pasquantino hit a two-run double and Mike Yastrzemski reached base three times and scored twice as the Royals beat the A’s for the first time in five meetings this season. The victory improved Kansas City’s record to 81-80, while fell to 76-85.
The Royals struck quickly against Athletics starter Luis Morales (4-3). Yastrzemski led off the game with a double that deflected off the glove of third baseman Darell Hernaiz and into left field. Bobby Witt Jr. followed with a single to put runners on the corners, and Yastrzemski scored the game’s first run when Pasquantino grounded out to first base.
The game remained a tight 1-0 affair until the fifth inning, when Kansas City extended its lead. Michael Massey and Yastrzemski hit back-to-back singles with one out. After Witt Jr. flied out, Pasquantino delivered the key blow, a two-run double to left field that scored both runners and gave the Royals a 3-0 advantage.
Wacha was in complete control, navigating through the Athletics lineup with ease. He worked around a walk in the second inning by inducing an inning-ending double play from Hernaiz. His biggest test came in the sixth, when he allowed a walk to Nick Kurtz and a single to Shea Langeliers, putting runners on first and second with one out. Wacha escaped the jam by getting Tyler Soderstrom to fly out and Brent Rooker to strike out on a foul tip, preserving the shutout.
The Athletics finally broke through against the Royals bullpen in the seventh inning. Hernaiz singled and scored on a double by Carlos Cortes, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Oakland threatened again in the eighth. Kurtz led off with a single and scored on a double by Langeliers, his third hit of the game, pulling the A’s within a run. The inning could have unraveled further for Kansas City, but reliever Jonathan Bowlan entered and, with a runner on first, got Rooker to ground into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play, snuffing out the rally.
Kansas City added a crucial insurance run in the top of the ninth. Pinch-runner Tyler Tolbert, who entered after Randal Grichuk singled, advanced to third on a lineout and scored on a two-out RBI single from Witt Jr., pushing the lead back to two runs.
Carlos Estévez entered in the bottom of the ninth to close it out for the Royals. After hitting Jacob Wilson with a pitch to put the tying run on base, Estévez struck out Lawrence Butler and Darell Hernaiz before getting Cortes to fly out to left field, securing his 42nd save of the season.
The Royals’ victory was a testament to strong pitching and timely hitting, overcoming their recent struggles against the Athletics. The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday.
