Oakland Athletics at Boston Red Sox
BOSTON (Interstat) — The Athletics and Boston Red Sox will conclude their three-game series at Fenway Park on Wednesday night, with the clubs having split the first two contests.
The Athletics (71-80) evened the series with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday, snapping a three-game skid against the Red Sox this season. Oakland’s pitching staff was stellar, as Mitch Spence, Jeffrey Springs and Hogan Harris combined to allow just one run on eight hits.
Boston (82-69), which remains in the American League wild-card hunt, saw its three-game winning streak end with the loss. Starter Connelly Early was strong in the defeat, allowing one run on five hits over 5 1/3 innings while striking out seven.
The season series has been a tale of extremes. The Red Sox shut out the Athletics in back-to-back games in from Sept. 8-9, outscoring them 13-0. The Athletics then won a 5-4 contest on Sept. 10 before the teams exchanged one-run decisions in the current series.
Oakland arrives having won five of its last eight games, including a series win over Cincinnati over the weekend where the offense erupted for 21 runs in two games. Boston has been inconsistent, having lost series to both New York and Cleveland in recent weeks while also posting impressive offensive outputs.
Despite the Athletics’ victory Tuesday, statistical models favor the home team. Interstat’s ELO system gives the Red Sox a 60.1 percent probability to win. However, the same outlet’s game simulator projects a 6-4 victory. Boston has been installed as a -1.5 run favorite, with the over/under set at 8.5 runs.
Following Wednesday’s finale, the Athletics will travel to Pittsburgh for a three-game set with the Pirates. The Red Sox, meanwhile, embark on a critical seven-game road trip, starting with three against the Tampa Bay Rays before heading to Toronto for four games against the Blue Jays.
