Oakland Athletics at Boston Red Sox
BOSTON (Interstat) — The Athletics, riding a wave of late-season momentum, will look to continue their spoiler role when they open a three-game series against the playoff-contending Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
The Athletics (70-80) arrive in Boston having won three straight and five of their last six, including a series victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Their offense has been potent, scoring 21 runs in their last three games. Outfielder Colby Thomas is coming off a strong performance, going 3-for-4 with a home run in Sunday’s 7-4 win.
Conversely, the Red Sox (82-68) are fighting to solidify their position in the American League playoff picture. They salvaged a split with the rival New York Yankees with a 6-4 victory on Sunday, powered by a strong starting pitching performance.
This series is a quick rematch of a set in just last week, which the Red Sox won two games to one. Boston’s pitching dominated in the first two contests, shutting out the A’s 7-0 and 6-0. Oakland, however, avoided the sweep with a 5-4 walk-off victory on Sept. 10.
Despite Oakland’s recent surge, betting markets and statistical models are split on the outcome. Boston has been installed as a -1.5 run favorite, and the ELO system gives the Red Sox a 60.6% probability to win. However, the Interstat game simulator projects an upset, forecasting a 6-4 victory for the visiting Athletics. The over/under for total runs is set at 9.
The series continues Wednesday and Thursday before both clubs hit the road for their next series. travels to Pittsburgh, while Boston heads to Tampa Bay for a critical divisional matchup.
