Cincinnati Reds at Milwaukee Brewers

MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — The Milwaukee Brewers used a three-run fourth inning, powered by a go-ahead two-run homer from Danny Jansen, to defeat the Cincinnati Reds 4-2 on Sunday evening at American Family Field, securing a series split to close the regular season.

A crowd of 41,055 watched as the Brewers (97-65) rallied from an early two-run deficit to finish their campaign on a high note, while the Reds (83-79) ended their year with a .500 record in their final 20 games.

Cincinnati struck first, taking an early lead with solo home runs in back-to-back innings. Elly De La Cruz launched his 22nd of the season, a solo shot to center field in the top of the second. TJ Friedl followed an inning later, making it 2-0 with his 14th homer, a fly ball to right-center.

Milwaukee began its comeback in the bottom of the third. Jackson Chourio led off with a double and scored on Brice Turang’s run-scoring double to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Brewers’ offense broke through in the decisive fourth inning. Isaac Collins started the rally with a ground-rule double down the right-field line. After a flyout advanced Collins to third, Jansen stepped up and delivered the key blow, launching a two-run homer to left field, his 14th of the year, to give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead.

The Brewers were not finished. Chourio singled and Turang walked, setting the stage for Andrew Vaughn, who drove an RBI double to center field, scoring Chourio to extend the lead to 4-2.

From that point, the game became a battle of the bullpens, and Milwaukee’s relief corps dominated. After starter Chad Patrick opened with a scoreless inning, five Brewers relievers combined to throw eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 10.

Aaron Ashby, Trevor Megill, Jared Koenig and Abner Uribe each contributed a scoreless frame. Uribe earned his seventh save of the season by retiring the Reds in order in the ninth inning.

Megill (6-3) was credited with the win after his perfect inning of work in the fifth.

The loss was charged to Cincinnati starter Brady Singer (14-12), who lasted 3 1/3 innings, surrendering three runs on five hits while striking out five. The Reds’ bullpen also provided strong relief, with Chase Burns, Connor Phillips and Scott Barlow combining for 4 2/3 innings of scoreless, hitless baseball, striking out seven.

Cincinnati managed only five hits in the game, with Friedl, De La Cruz, Gavin Lux, Noelvi Marte and Spencer Steer accounting for them. Milwaukee finished with seven hits, led by Jansen, who went 2-for-3 with the crucial home run and two RBIs.

The game-time temperature was 68 degrees, and the contest was played in 2 hours, 35 minutes. The result ensured the four-game series between the National League Central rivals ended in a 2-2 split after the Reds won the previous two contests.
