Blue Jays rout Rays to cap regular season behind Kirk’s 6 RBIs
TORONTO (Interstat) — In a regular-season finale that served as a resounding statement of intent, the Toronto Blue Jays erupted for a 13-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday evening, capping a successful series and solidifying their postseason credentials.
The game, played before a crowd of 42,083 at Rogers Centre, was a tale of two offenses moving in opposite directions. The Blue Jays amassed 15 hits, including four home runs, while their bullpen delivered six innings of shutout, one-hit relief to silence the Rays after a shaky start.
The contest began with both teams trading blows in a frantic first inning. The Rays struck first, with Richie Palacios leading off the game with a single and later scoring on a Jonathan Aranda single to center field. The early lead was short-lived, however, as the Blue Jays’ offense immediately responded in a massive way in the bottom half of the frame.
After Rays starter Ian Seymour walked George Springer and Davis Schneider, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled to right to drive in one run. Following a strikeout, a single by Daulton Varsho loaded the bases for Alejandro Kirk. The Toronto catcher then delivered the inning’s defining moment, launching a grand slam to left-center field to vault the Blue Jays into a 5-1 lead. The blast set an immediate, powerful tone from which the Rays would never recover.
Tampa Bay mounted its most significant challenge in the third inning, plating three runs to claw back into the game. With two runners on, Aranda struck again, lacing a two-run single to right field. Jake Mangum followed with another run-scoring single, cutting the Toronto lead to a narrow 5-4 margin.
That would be the high-water mark for the Rays’ offense. The Blue Jays’ bullpen, activated in the fourth inning, took control and stifled any further threats. Mason Fluharty, who earned the win to improve to 5-2, was the first of five Toronto relievers to combine for six dominant innings, allowing just one hit and striking out nine batters. Brendon Little was particularly overpowering, striking out the side in his one inning of work.
Toronto began to steadily pull away, adding a single run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Andrés Giménez. The lead expanded in the fifth when Kirk continued his phenomenal day at the plate, blasting his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to center field that made the score 8-4.
The game was put completely out of reach in a five-run seventh inning that showcased the depth of the Blue Jays’ lineup. After a single by Varsho, Addison Barger launched a two-run homer to right-center. Later in the inning, with a runner on, Myles Straw tripled to drive in another run. Springer, the next batter, provided the exclamation point, crushing a two-run homer to center field to cap the scoring at 13-4.
Kirk was the undeniable offensive star for Toronto, finishing the day 3 for 5 with two home runs and a career-high six RBIs. His two-homer, six-RBI performance powered the lineup from the heart of the order. Springer also had a multi-hit game, going 3 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Barger contributed two hits, including his home run, and two RBIs.
For the Rays, Aranda drove in three of the team’s four runs, going 2 for 5. Palacios collected three of Tampa Bay’s nine hits on the day. The loss was charged to Ian Seymour, who fell to 4-3 after surrendering five runs in his one inning of work.
The victory secures a series sweep for the Blue Jays over the Rays, following wins on Friday and Saturday, and provides a surge of momentum as they head into the postseason. Toronto finishes the 2025 campaign with a record of 94 wins and 68 losses, a successful year that positions them as a formidable contender. The Rays, meanwhile, see their season conclude with a record of 77 wins and 85 losses, ending a difficult series on a sour note against their American League East rivals.
