Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox
BOSTON (Interstat) — Jahmai Jones hit a two-run single to rally the Detroit Tigers from an early deficit, and they beat the Boston Red Sox 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park to clinch a spot in the American League playoffs.
Less than 24 hours after the Red Sox sealed their own postseason berth, the Tigers claimed at least a wild card and eliminated the Houston Astros from the race. Detroit, which improved to 87-74, still could win the AL Central title but would need help from Cleveland, which played Texas on Saturday afternoon.
A pitchers’ duel unfolded in front of a crowd of 36,478, with the game time lasting 2 hours, 27 minutes, a stark contrast to the high-scoring affair projected by pregame simulations.
Boston struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Ceddanne Rafaela and Carlos Narváez hit back-to-back singles off Detroit starter Keider Montero. After a flyout advanced Rafaela to third, Nick Sogard drove him in with a single to center field, giving the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.
The game remained a tense, one-run affair until the top of the fifth. Detroit’s Dillon Dingler sparked the rally with a one-out single off Boston starter Connelly Early. After a popout, Javier Báez singled and Parker Meadows walked to load the bases. Jones then delivered the decisive blow, lacing a ground ball single to left field that scored both Dingler and Báez.
Montero set the tone for Detroit’s pitching staff, working 4 1/3 innings and allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven. The Tigers’ bullpen took over from there, combining for 4 2/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit relief.
Tyler Holton (6-5) earned the win by recording four key outs. Will Vest pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out one, to secure his 23rd save of the season.
Early (1-2) was the hard-luck loser for Boston, now 88-73. He pitched five innings, surrendering two runs on four hits and striking out seven. Red Sox reliever Chris Murphy provided three strong innings of one-hit relief, but the Boston offense could not mount a comeback against Detroit’s bullpen.
The Tigers’ victory evened the three-game series after Boston won the opener 4-3 on Friday. The two teams will conclude the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park.
